California has strict laws on olive oil to prevent getting a whole bunch of undesirable oils added in without being listed in ingredients, but, always check the California labels because some will list oils added from other countries. I've made the mistake of seeing a California olive oil and purchased it without looking at the label that listed oils from other countries. Also, Italy is one of the worst offenders of subbing subpar oils.
