David seems quite pleased with efforts to find life on Mars, though realistically it's mostly job security for his somewhat vague profession isn't it? (sorry David) His job is looking into the heavens and pondering where there may be life. I don't see where this video actually presents "the real reason" NASA looking for life on Mars-as the title infers.

I'm all for space exploration; and I know we're limited in destination choices because of our lack of ability to traverse space with enough speed to realize real time results AND our current inability to survive the cosmic ray bombardment along the way. . So Mars is pretty much our only real option in the foreseeable future.

How would it be "profoundly important" if we found the early signs of formative life? He didn't address that-.other than saying, "Nothing like going there and lookin'" as if it were a short drive - vs lab experiments...and ahm well public support and funding might jump if we found some fossils up there or whatever.

Sure scientific evolutionary development in the space travel arena is slow, with important results not recognizable perhaps as they happen. Like many things that look so quick and obvious in hindsight, but actually took some years to fully develop.

I'd kinda prefer to hear that it's important to solve the challenges of space travel by taking these baby-steps to Mars, because someday we may need to be able to travel to other habitable planets etc as the motivation.
