I think Neo and Smith represent the good and not so good personalities that we as humans possess. I don’t really see Smith as a bad guy, I see him more of a guy that’s just feed up with humanity because of our selfishness, greed and the horrible things we do to each other.

Despite all of our great advances in technology, we are still no better than neanderthals.

Humans are capable of spreading and multiplying in different areas and living off the resources because humans are not only apex predators but also extremely intelligent and capable of translating that intelligence into technology. Other apex predators spread as far as they can, that’s why orcas are found in every ocean on the planet. If orcas could walk on land and had hands to build tools they may be able to compete with humans for global domination.

Basically Smith wanted out and to be on his own as the main arch of his character since part 1.

His ascension in Reloaded wasn’t just some plot they developed to make a sequel. He was the inevitable main bad guy even to the point that he superseded the machine world.

He was going to consume everything and only leave him in existence. A deity. God was alone then he created. Smith consumes until he’s alone.
