It baffles me that people feel they can tell other people what genre they should or shouldn't be doing or who can represent a specific genre.

I bet none of y’all know who was the first Black Country Singer. Mr. Charlie Pride and he is amazing he still is alive at 84

I bet he doesn't say anything about how Taylor swift bounces back and forth between country and pop music, using both genres and fan bases to host her overall celebrity.

This is that “go back to your country” mentality. Music is universal and country music started with blues and soul created people. Country music isn’t confound to a set amount of particular people. He’s salty because he didn’t get asked to perform.

Dear Travis, that was a nice way to say if you don’t look like us and you’re not a part of our group you can’t come to the party. Country music is not a cult. It is not a treasure group that no one else can be a part of. Music is music, Black people have helped create country music along with many other types of music, the blues, rock ‘n’ roll, hip-hop and most importantly country. We are Americans we all love music and we should all share in the joy that is music. Can I get an amen!

I’m glad they didn’t have this attitude when Ray Charles was making an R&B album one year in a country album the next year! And all the racist comments that came after the Dixie Chicks and Beyoncé performed just goes to show you that it’s just a bunch of racism. Seems like country music has forgotten that they have African-American fans. If they weren’t so busy gatekeeping, they could probably have a whole lot more. But I guess that’s not what they want. I guess the priority is to keep country music white. If it weren’t, then there wouldn’t have been a bunch of racist backlash from that performance! Personally I thought Beyoncé did a fine job with that song and that all of their voices blended very nicely together.

“I don’t feel we need outside genre artist because I wanna gate keep country music” this is the sum of what he’s saying

In other words he was mad Beyonce performed. The truth of who they are always comes out. He did’nt give a darn about Sting, Elton, or Justin T. But that black girl got him hot. Oh and how does he know what music Beyonce listens to? Did he ask her? Nope, just blowing more bigoted hot air.

As a person whose favorite music is traditional country, country music is by far at its best when it’s not confined to something extremely narrow. There is honky tonk, bluegrass, western, bluesy country, rock 70s country, pop country and others, and they’re all country. Country music is a broad genre. And just to remind everyone, country came DIRECTLY from blues and jazz along the Mississippi (which was black people) and not much is said about that in the history books. The entire point of music is that it is art and not to be confined to something that’s already been thought of before.

was invented by southern BLACK people and white men stole their music and claimed it as their own. I'm not even black nor white but I know more about the history of music. so don't get it. if he is really a true country artist you think he would have an appreciation on where his music came from. CARES! music is beautiful and music brings all kinds of people together so I say music should be celebrated and appreciated from all over the world!

Let's be real, the reason country music has grown not because its remained traditional, but because it has continually taken from other genres of music to appeal to a wider fan base. If you want to talk traditional country music, then you'd be strictly bluegrass just banjos and blow jars poppin' and you wouldn't have Carrie Underwood, Taylor Swift, Blake, etc...he'll you wouldn't have any of the artists that are actually selling out stadiums because they are not traditional...and you were strictly racially motivated by your remarks about beyonce's involvement because if not you wouldn't have made the slick remarks about country singers being at the BET awards as if they're not allowed. There have been several country artist who have been in videos with RNb and hip hop artists whose videos have played on BET even staying at the top of the video and radio charts, not to mention even been up for awards, I.e. Tim McGraw and Nelly "over and over"...if you do nothing else, do some research before you make asinine remarks like that for the whole world to see.

Okay I'm going to just leave this . Beyonce did do these songs more country than country songs today and she has a great voice. I actually hope she puts out some good stuff . But she definitely isn't hurting country at all . Look at it today. Hers sounds better than some .

I say we do him a solid and don't watch CMAs. Like he said, they can stand on their own. I'm certainly not going where I'm not welcomed. Those of us who see music as a unifying force can just celebrate music diversity together, and screw all the hateful people who try to hide their racism behind a particular music genre that they didn't even create.
