Loretta Lynn presents the Living Legend Award in 1997. But the recipient, the great Charley Pride, doesn't expect to be the lucky one. The surprise at knowing his name is reflected on his face.

Charley Frank Pride (March 18, 1934 – December 12, 2020) was an American singer, guitarist, and professional baseball player. His greatest musical success came in the early to mid-1970s, when he was the best-selling performer for RCA Records since Elvis Presley. During the peak years of his recording career (1966–1987), he had 52 top-10 hits on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, 30 of which made it to number one. He won the Entertainer of the Year award at the Country Music Association Awards in 1971.

Pride is one of three African-American members of the Grand Ole Opry (the others being DeFord Bailey and Darius Rucker). He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2000.

It's truly refreshing to see someone genuinely surprised to win an award. He was so talented and successful, but remained humble and grounded. Priceless reaction!

Loretta was told not to stand too close, not to to touch Charlie Pride but she didn't listen in her own way gave a middle finger to the establishment without giving a actual middle finger by hugging and kissing Charlie Pride on the lips. We need to honor women of such strong moral convictions. We all should follow Loretta's example.

Charlie Pride had more talent than 90% of the "country" singers today -- combined.

A black man who says he's proud to be an American. What a class act.

What a gentleman. He could teach a lot of entertainers a thing or two about morality and gratefulness.

Charley Pride broke down color barriers with his voice alone. Alot of people at the time believed him to be a White country singer, imagine their surprise after learning and singing his songs on the radio then finding out later he was in fact a black man. Content of his character rather than his skin color proved to be the key to his success and the softening of racial bias during the turbulent times then. I miss shows like that where truly humble people are honored and accept their accolades with dignity. Thanks for posting this video.😎👌🇺🇲

I was born in Helena, Montana. When I was a toddler, (about 60 years ago) my mom and dad used to go dancing at a bar called the "Silver Spur." Their favorite attraction there was Charlie Pride. Charlie worked at a lead smelter plant, played baseball for that company's team, and played country music in the juke joints. My mom was a cashier at the Safeway grocery store, and Mrs. Pride always waited in line to go through my mom's checkout. They became friends, and had great conversations together. When Charlie made the big time, we would watch him on T.V. Even though he and his family lived in Montana for only a few years, my mom and dad had this attitude that "Local home boy does good!" They were very proud of him, and talked about him and his family all through the years.

The smile on Glen Campbell's face was so touching. Glen was so happy it was Charley's name on that card. It really says something about who Charley was as a person.

An honor well deserved. It's sad knowing that both Loretta Lynn, George Jones and Charley Pride are no longer with us.

I had the pleasure of riding in a shuttle taking Charlie Pride to his home in Dallas from an auto dealership. He talked about his kids the entire time. He was so proud of them. Charlie Pride was a great guy.
