Do I need to fill holes in wood before I apply epoxy resin?
Slabs of dry wood often come with natural imperfections such as cracks, holes and knots. Steps should be taken to fill these holes before you apply your epoxy resin coat or else the epoxy will leak through them, wasting a lot of resin and making a huge mess. Filling cracks, holes and knots first with a clear epoxy resin like Industrial Clear is a good idea for 4 reasons:

To prevent leaks.
To help stabilize the wood.
To create a smooth, even surface.
To maintain the wood's natural look.

Taking the steps to fill holes in the wood before applying a resin top coat will help get a perfect result every time.

How to fill cracks, voids, knots and pinholes in wood
Step 1: Tape the holes off.
The first step is to flip the wood over so the bottom side is facing up. Identify each hole, even the seemingly small ones, and mask them off with a good quality painter's tape or sheathing tape. Burnish the tape with your fingers to ensure a tight bond to avoid leaks.

Step 2: Fill the wood holes with epoxy resin.
Once the holes are taped off, flip the board back so that the taped side is once again on the bottom.

Prepare Industrial Clear according to the label directions. Apply the epoxy resin by pouring from a small plastic cup, a dropper or a craft stick to fill each crack, hole, and knot. If the wood absorbs the resin, this may take a few small pours. You want each hole slightly overfilled with epoxy resin.

Allow the resin to cure for 24 hours.

Step 3: Sand and pour the final coat.
Once the Industrial Clear has cured, remove the tape, and sand both top and bottom until the surface is smooth and level.

Blow off any sanding dust and debris and pour your final coat. Once the resin has cured, the results will be smooth, even and beautiful and you'll never know there were imperfections in the wood.

There's always a way to get a perfect finish with Industrial Clear.
