The Black Widow spider is one of the few extremely venomous spiders found in the United States. Like most spiders, they can be shy, but won’t hesitate to give you a potentially deadly bite if disturbed.
The Black Widow can be found around homes, yards, and businesses, and their venom has been reported to be fifteen times stronger than a rattlesnake’s. So it’s important to get control of this dangerous pest.
The Black Widow spider can be found throughout the world, and throughout the United States but are more densely distributed in the American South and West where the climate is hot, arid, and humid.
Black Widows are relatively small - measuring around a half and one and a half inches long. The female Black Widow is easily identified by their jet black and shiny body and their distinctive red marking on their stomach. Male and some other types of Black Widows are actually a brown or tan color, and could have orange markings.
Black widow spiders like to hide in dry, cluttered storage areas like attics, basements, or garages. They can be found outside in yard debris like wood, under rocks, and tall grass. They can also be found in barns, outhouses, and sheds. To get control, first reduce clutter in and around your home as much as possible.
After that, it’s time to move on to chemical control.
First, use Reclaim IT insecticide with a pump sprayer. Reclaim IT is a powerful liquid concentrate with a long lasting residual. Spray baseboards around the home and in closets, in and around garages, and around windows and doors.
You can also use a product like Pyrid aerosol for quick contact kills.
Also use Catchmaster glue boards to trap hard to find spiders. This is a board with a sticky surface that will trap the spiders and other crawling pests. The spiders will walk across the boards and get stuck and can then be disposed of. Place these in garages, closets, and storage areas.
Next use D-Fense dust to treat any voids. This is a waterproof insecticidal dust that can be puffed into voids and openings around your home. Using a duster, apply D-Fense into voids that Black Widows and other pests can use to enter your home. You can then seal these voids with a fine copper mesh or caulk.
Finally, use Reclaim IT outside, and spray flower and mulch beds, around rocks, around yard debris, eaves, and light fixtures. Also create a barrier around your home by spraying two the three feet up the structure and two to three feet out.
These professional products and steps will not only help you control black widow spiders, but many different types of pests. This is ideal because it eliminates the spiders’ food source, giving you effective, long-lasting control.
