I've hiked alone, all over the world, for over 40 years. The key is knowing the dangers, knowing your limits and not doing something stupid. That being said, accidents do happen. May she rest in peace.

remember when you go to a waterfall look at it from the lower vantage. Never walk out near the falls… this happens every year near me

As a fan of hiking, I tend to pick less challenging hikes and always take those with clearly marked and clearly defined trails. Might be a wimpy doing hikes, but it gets me a nice share of healthy exercise, plus I never get lost and never injure myself.

In my personal opinion, you should never hike alone or unarmed. Nature is dangerous and unabashedly does not discriminate.

Hiking alone is never smart. Just like swimming in the ocean, always have a buddy. I've been to this area and it's scary. She's from Chicago so maybe she wasn't aware of all the dangers, but should never have ventured out alone. RIP. ❤

All these comments about hiking alone by people who sound like they never hiked. What difference would it have made if she wasn't alone? Two people dead? That topography is treacherous and a flowing creek with a waterfall is terribly hazardous and deadly. Things happen quickly. Be careful and prepared.

When you cross a creek above a waterfall, ensure there's some kind of barrier you can catch, should you slip and fall; and that barrier can not be the last rapids above the falls.
So glad Monterey has water in the creeks.
