Sometimes I meet people who think that living a structured and disciplined life is limiting... I think it's liberating. In this video, I talk about why self-discipline is important and how it actually leads to freedom.

Hey guys, thanks for watching! Glad too see the overwhelming positivity and receptiveness to the message in this video. I've received some good constructive feedback that I'd like to add to this video. At some point in the video, I use the phrase "genetic engineering" to describe how food is being altered to be more addictive. That was a poor choice of words on my part. I meant engineering as a synonym for "created" and genetic should not have been placed in that sentence :). Thanks to all those who have pointed that out. Have a good day!

We must all suffer one of two things: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret.

The reason why I feel self discipline frees you from yourself is that when you succumb to short term desires consistently then you are like a slave to those desire, however if you say no and do what YOU want and KNOW is the right thing to do then you'll feel a sense of freedom, a sense of control in your life. It is hard and a difficult path but it's worth it.

Self-discipline is extremely important. Like the saying goes, the mind is an excellent slave but a terrible master. If we let our minds dictate the flow of our lives, we'll become slaves to our moods and fluctuating desires which in turn will only bring us misery. I had to learn it the hard way during the lockdown that despite being worn down by having a regular routine of school, tuition and other activities, they helped me have a sense of purpose and direction and kept me in shape. I wish to cure myself of this cycle of lethargy I have gotten stuck in, and I hope I can also get the message across to many people so they don't suffer the same way I did.

This video might have changed my life. It’s only day 3 right now.

I’ve watched it a few times now, the idea of self discipline being freeing was a huge epiphany producing psychological flip for me. As I say it’s a day 3 and I don’t let a damn thing go without doing it. Diet, bed time, alarm no snooze, exercise, catching up with business. I feel unbelievable.

I am trying to turn my life around and be self-disciplined. I moved to another city, far away from friends and family so I can go back to school for science and to not be distracted by anyone. I can already see that when I go back to visit my friends, that they'll think I'm boring but this video is helping put into words what I actually feel. I don't want to continue to give in to short term pleasures, it has made me into a "loser" by my standards. I'm 34 and still haven't achieve anything meaningful in my life so I don't care if others think my life is boring. They haven't done anything for me and their opinion of me is irrelevant. I just want to live the life I have, doing what I want and achieving the goals I set out (healthy body and mind, and successful career - not working for someone else).

I love this video. I was trying to put this concept into words myself because I'm often mocked or looked down on by others for "living like a monk". They tell me I need to "live a little" or "loosen up", but I don't feel restrained by my disciplined lifestyle: it comes to me with little to no effort. I feel accomplished at the end of the day, unlike in the past where I felt my life was wasting away. And feeling accomplished is a great mood booster. The hard part is settling into new routines, but once it becomes habit, it's easy to maintain from there.

I lost my sense of discipline when this pandemic happens. I let myself do the hell I wanted to do causing my old bad habits to resurface again. My sleeping and eating schedule are completely messed up. And I'm having a hard time to catch up my academic. The freedom that I thought I have made me feel trapped and miserable.

This video, I must say has been one of the most influential videos of my life. I remember watching this in sometime during last February, and after I realised the point communicated, I started improving a lot in my studies. To everyone reading this comment, self discipline may be a bit difficult at first, but it's going to be well worth it. Have a good day(or a night)!

EDIT: It's been around 4 years, and the momentum has been great! I eventually got into one of the most selective programs in the country for college. There have obviously been a lot of setbacks, but the seed of thought that this video sowed so many years ago has now blossomed into so much. Thanks a lot Freedom in Thought!

I understood self discipline by spoiling myself to maximum that I got fed up of it.

Great video. Maybe you should follow it up with a video on how to self discipline yourself or how you do it.

Oh my god thank you. Your title is so true. It’s the thought that comes up sometimes when people talk about their freedom when they’re really just exaggerating on why they should be free to do everything they want to without considering their responsibilities as humans and as community members.

I love how you were able to make this so clear and understandable with so few words.

I've tried to explain the same exact concept to people numerous times and managed to overcomplicate it to the point of nonsense just about every time.

Nice work man.

I have to agree with you, but to a degree. Self discipline is just a different cage to choose to be in. Either one alone is of course ridiculous, which you can see if you realise that these long term goals are just biology-based too. And also that living with a degree of goofiness and spontenaiety is fun. When it comes to compromise, my favourite thing is instead forming good rewarding habits.
I am not being groundbreaking, I'm being that normal nuanced viewpoint that doesn't like to go viral on the internet.

Sugar is the tool of choice not fat for these food manufacturers. Glucose and glycogen stores deplete quicker and separate from fat stores. This leads many people to eat more, more often, and with less impulse control.
