I wanted to go a little more in depth so here it is:

While Thunderbolt DOES have WAY faster charging speeds and data transfer speeds, it also has a lot of extra features over normal USB. Features like eGPU, acting as DisplayPort, PCIe, and more.

Originally, Intel and Apple made it together, however, Apple passed it to Intel. Currently, only Intel manages Thunderbolt. Thunderbolt was closed source and only developed/managed by Intel, however, it became open-source a little while ago.

After it became open-source, the USB Forum added most of the extra Thunderbolt features into USB 4 as "Optional Features". These optional features can be added by the cable manufacturers if they want. However, since all of these are optional, they might make one USB cable cost more than another because of the extra features. Along with that, it's really hard to find a cable with all Thunderbolt features built in, so it's better to just get a Thunderbolt cable if you'll be using all of it.

If you didn't understand all of that technical lingo, don't worry, it's not going to change your life. However, if you really want to know, you can just leave a reply here or Google it.

Distractible Listers knows how much Markiplier loves to talk about the different types of USBs....

If his explanation wasn’t rudimentary enough Imagine USB-C and Thunderbolt are like two types of keys and ports for your computer.

1. **USB-C:** This is like a regular key that can open many doors. USB-C ports are found on lots of devices, like laptops and phones. They can do things like charge your device, connect to other devices (like a printer or a mouse), and transfer data (like copying pictures from your phone to your computer). Think of it as a key that can open many different kinds of locks.

2. **Thunderbolt:** This is like a special, super-powered key that can do even more. It can open the same doors as USB-C (charge your device, connect to other devices, transfer data), but it can also do things like connect to really fast hard drives, external graphics cards, and even connect your computer to a fancy monitor with just one cable. It's like a key that not only opens many locks but also opens some really high-security ones.

So, USB-C is like a versatile key that works in lots of places, while Thunderbolt is a more powerful key that can do everything USB-C can and some extra special things too.

Technically it's higher standard/specification certified by intel (takes a long while) in order to use that branding. It's compatible with USB devices though.

Wtf? That man just made it more confusing. Just say they are the same and that thunderbolt is just faster and got most of the love as a child than usbc.

also there are 3 different types of thunderbolt, the other 2 used a different connector. was really cool back in the day being able to plug your macbook into an iMac for a perfect second display

On some laptops, you can connect a desktop GPU using the Thunderbolt.

Thunder bolt allows intel bios that support thunderbolt to run the pcie bus over a usb cable but the only thing thats usb about the process is the physical cable. Not too different how a pcie riser can run 1x pcie over a usb cable.

That's 💯 correct my guy. And with the rumors with iphone 15 series tell us that it will come with thunderbolt 4 but unfortunately only for the pros. The normal 15 will get 2.0 which is equipped for my $150 Redmi phone.

Thunderbolt has some unique features which plain usb-c does not have. For example you can use it as a display output. That way you can plug everything into a hub and connect it to your device.
I am currently planning a setup where I can just swap my peripherals from my work laptop to my PC with just plugging the Thunderbolt cable from my hub

Thunderbolt also had it's own connector up till 3.0. In short it's a mixed bag. If i recal correctly thunderbolt was dropped since usb 4.0, since it was integrated into usb 4.0

That's right, the current version of thunderbolt happens to use the USB C port.

For ppl who didn't understand a single thing, just assume that thunderbolt is much more complex and higher level of data transfer port than type-c, that can do multiple cables job(hdmi, usb etc) with just this one port, that's it. Don't sweat the small stuff if u aren't even interested

I mean... I know the detailed answer and yet, this guy summarized it well! Kudos! 👏

Fact (Source: LTT, Wikipedia and USB Compliance): USB 4 (uses USB-C) has Thunderbolt 3 support
Also, both Thunderbolt 4 and USB 4 are already in a laptop.

In theory USB c ist capable of everything thunderbold can do, but a lot more ist optional.

However, Thunderbolt didn’t always utilize the Type C connector; in fact, it sported a completely different design. It had its own unique connector, and thunderbolt cables were sold separately. Apple incorporated them into their Macs and chargers for iPods, both of which included Thunderbolt cables.
