France was probably one of the worst colonisers in history. Very few places were able to peacefully leave the French overseas empire, most ending up as failed states after years of fighting to leave, only to be left in a power struggle between local warlords, or in the hands of successful but brutal revolutionaries, leading to some of the longest standing autocracies.

I wouldn't look past the British handling Palestine (depressingly, still relevant today), Kenya or India, or definitely Belgium and the Congo, but France was consistently holding onto its assets post-war, even though every other country knew the writing was on the wall.
