The Britain-France rivalry effectively ended when British victory in the Napoleonic Wars established Britain as the undisputed global superpower. After that point, France wasn’t really a threat to Britain and became a valuable ally when other empires threatened to displace British and French power.

The British almost joined the central powers pre-WWI. The Germans basically said ‘Any attack on any colonial holding shall be treated like an attack on the isles’ while the British, due to mistranslation, thought the Germans would only come to Britains aid if there was an attack on the isles and ONLY the isles. They were very cordial before the dawn of the Triple Entente because of the German Kaiser Willhelm II and the British King George V being cousins.
