Maybe all those diagnosed with ‘mental illness’ are just suffering from an abusive environment… in some way. And the socio-economic environment is exploitative for most people, that is a fact. We have, through a sociopathic financial system, a two-class society, the exploiters vs the exploited.

the avoidance grabbed me. History shows this is how power asymmetries work by creating distance. No matter how sophisticated, these truncated lens are just that - partial snapshots parading as a fulsome and harmonious science when we know its not. We have now ended up with homogeneity where these self-referents have seeped through as presenting issues-how they are popularly framed in discourse; how something is naturalised, which shows how pliant and permeable our brains are. For most primary problems of suffering, this last point can be good news, but it does require more enlightened societies; not just a reliance on personal attributes to embolden change. These pressure points burn us out and that is more probable to happen through social stratification disadvantage.

Very good talk. I think Mary, Lucy and John are the most intelligent people in academia cuurently… generally academia are in a bad shape… so this talk of contextual understanding, is a true treasure. Very well done. I hope they will read my paper on the monetary system and it’s current exploitative structure. It’s the logical step in speaking truth to power.

Mary Boyle's talk was so riveting and for me very accurate. God knows what the audience thought about it. And how therapy absurdly overlooks social context and socially driven vulnerability. Social context (not a great term, but) has a massive 'matrix' like impact. Such as poverty, such as the abuse of position and group power against others. Most theories about Autism, for example, are in fact a denial model of how people are treated and how this then imprints upon them, a sense of marginality. Empowerment is a found in social change, not individual (in one's mind) change.

It seems that using 'avoidant' rather than 'fearful' in the tittle would be more accurate since that was described in her talk as being the main factor which is not always initiated from a place of fear but rather either from good intentions using dysfunctional strategies or as a bias that supports their own privileges (unconsciously or with conscious maliciousness) such as

Where do humans live? Embedded in a social context.

What social context? People who grew up in a shit-show of an environment grew up in it. Neither the therapist nor the patient have any reason to avoid that "context". It is, after all, their reality.

Psychology is a language that is mostly understood by Psychologists, to quote Nietzsche " Whoever gives advice to a sick person acquires a feeling of superiority over them, whether the advice is accepted or rejected. Proud and sensitive sick people hate advisers more than their sickness. This video is more about Psychologists than Psychology, same, same same regurgitated clap-trap.

Brilliant talk... It's time to challange the neoliberal exploitative regime on every possible front. Pinning blame on people for their mental health status is a form of worst injustice. It's a time for divorce between psychology and psychiatry.
