Many Christians have become overly interested in justice, and not concerned enough with mercy or the other virtues. Father Pine in this video teaches about Justice and it's proper place in the Christian Life and Polity.

'Within the bounds of prudence...may forgive and love again where before there was hurt.'

Thank you, Fr. Pine!

Great sermon, Father.

Justice without mercy is no justice at all. Mercy without justice is not mercy at all.

Paul’s Letter to the Romans:

{12:9} Let love be without dissimulation. Hating that which is evil, cleaving to that which is good,
{12:10} Loving one another with the charity of brotherhood: with honour preventing one another.
{12:11} In carefulness not slothful. In spirit fervent. Serving the Lord.
{12:12} Rejoicing in hope. Patient in tribulation. Instant in prayer.
{12:13} Communicating to the necessities of the saints. Pursuing hospitality.
{12:14} Bless them that persecute you: bless, and curse not.
{12:15} Rejoice with them that rejoice: weep with them that weep.
{12:16} Being of one mind one towards another. Not minding high things, but consenting to the humble. Be not wise in your own conceits.
{12:17} To no man rendering evil for evil. Providing good things, not only in the sight of God but also in the sight of all men.
{12:18} If it be possible, as much as is in you, have peace with all men.
{12:19} Revenge not yourselves, my dearly beloved; but give place unto wrath, for it is written: Revenge is mine, I will repay, saith the Lord.
{12:20} But if the enemy be hungry, give him to eat; if he thirst, give him to drink. For, doing this, thou shalt heap coals of fire upon his head.
{12:21} Be not overcome by evil: but overcome evil by good.

Deuteronomy:

{32:31} For our God is not as their gods: our enemies themselves are judges.
{32:32} Their vines are of the vineyard of Sodom, and of the suburbs of Gomorrha: their grapes are grapes of gall, and their clusters most bitter.
{32:33} Their wine is the gall of dragons, and the venom of asps, which is incurable.
{32:34} Are not these things stored up with me, and sealed up in my treasures?
{32:35} Revenge is mine, and I will repay them in due time, that their foot may slide: the day of destruction is at hand, and the time makes haste to come.
{32:36} The Lord will judge his people, and will have mercy on his servants: he shall see that their hand is weakened, and that they who were shut up have also failed, and they that remained are consumed.
{32:37} And he shall say: Where are their gods, in whom they trusted?
{32:38} Of whose victims they ate the fat, and drank the wine of their drink offerings: let them arise and help you, and protect you in your distress.
{32:39} See ye that I alone am, and there is no other God besides me: I will kill and I will make to live: I will strike, and I will heal, and there is none that can deliver out of my hand.
{32:40} I will lift up my hand to heaven, and I will say: I live for ever.
{32:41} If I shall whet my sword as the lightning, and my hand take hold on judgment: I will render vengeance to my enemies, and repay them that hate me.
{32:42} I will make my arrows drunk with blood, and my sword shall devour flesh, of the blood of the slain and of the captivity, of the bare head of the enemies.
{32:43} Praise his people, ye nations, for he will revenge the blood of his servants: and will render vengeance to their enemies, and he will be merciful to the land of his people.

In order for you to love, forgive, and rebuild, there needs to be genuine recognition within the other of your legitimate needs and claims (i.e., justice). Oppressors don't get to say, "Hey, just be more loving."

Respectfully forgiveness is between the individual and god justice is between the individual and society. In order to truly be forgiven the individual must face justice in order to pay off their fellow man and therefore properly make peace with god knowing they have done what is right in the eye of god. You must face justice as part of forgiveness and those around you are right to insist that you do so in order to properly forgive you. you must show mercy to the victims of wrongdoing by ensuring justice is properly meted out and therefore not incentivise people to commit wrongdoing. lack of proper justice leads to more suffering for all.

Pray that all people submit themselves to justice and repent for their wrongdoing forgive them their sins in the eyes of god and accept them as a Christian but not the debt they owe the people around them.

From both sides of the political aisle there is a growing demand for justice but as Fr. Pine lays out, not a consideration for how that actually grants to one what they’re due in right proportion and mode. The left particularly demands indulgence for who they perceive to be victims of injustice but with little care where this material indulgence comes from and how this best elevates their human dignity. “Just throw money at it”. And further, the supposed perpetrators of injustice are often those with no serious moral fault, but due to their entirely materialist analysis of history, by virtue of being among the “haves”, there is no limit to the inconvenience they may be thrust into. You can notice this in the shift toward “equity” language opposed to “equality”. It breeds perpetual resentment, ill will, and discord.

I had a buddy ask me a question recently and I don’t think I’ve ever encountered it before. Can we ask future saints to pray for us in the here and the now? Will our prayers in the past be heard in the future when they make it to heaven? We all know people that are very likely going to be non canonized saints so can we ask for their intercession “ahead of time” as if they were “to be” saints? Or can we only ask their prayers in the human sense that you would anyone else??

The problem with our modern conception of justice is that we often make justice synonymous with revenge, and it is precisely because of this erroneous conflation that the heinous punishment of the death penalty still exists. Justice is not about revenge. Rather, justice should be about three tbings:

1. Redressing, when possible, the wronged party.

2. Protecting society against the perpetrator of the injustice.

3. Most importantly, reforming the perpetrator of the injust act so that he or she is not driven to commit such transgressions in the future.

Thank you, Father Pine. I have a comment and then a question: at least a couple of times you refer to self-denial as if it were something ridiculous and fool; but you also say that at times it is necessary to deny ourselves. It is clear to me that when you say that you don't mean that at times it is necessary to be ridiculous and fool. You distinguish a meaning of self-denial which is right and at least another meaning which is wrong. Could you please describe the right self-denial and explain the difference between it and the ridiculous and fool "self-denial"?

Don't know if he gets to this, even though the title doesn't suggest it, but justice in the Bible means righteousness (which we can never have too much of). So, if he doesn't get to it then he's talking about worldly justice apart from the Lord God.

When I saw your Headline, the first thing that popped into my pretty little head was Peter Tosh - the great Reggae singer - singing -
"Everyone is talkin' 'bout Peace. None is crying out for Justice...I don't want no 'Peace.' I-man need Equal Rights and Justice!"
Definitely about what the State owes its Citizens...But not so much about 'the Common Good.'
