Yes the world is over medicated, but the people who actually need the meds never get it thanks to others abusing the medications. There are people who need these to function.

I was diagnosed with ADHD at a very young age and was put on medication. My senior year of high school I took a very long look at myself and realized I would either have to figure out how to live with my crazy brain or I'd be taking those suppressants my whole life. Glad I decided to figure out how to live with adhd and not just suppress it

A statement I've heard before (that I also agree with) is that ADHD is both the most overdiagnosed and underdiagnosed mental health condition in the modern era. In essence, the argument is that the diagnosis is handed out almost casually with "problem" students who are just bored in class, but it is rarely given to anyone else regardless of how relevant it might be

I’ve been misdiagnosed with so many disorders from depression to anxiety to bipolar and none of them fit. I FINALLY got diagnosed with adhd and medicated for it and almost all of my other symptoms went away.

Some of us need it, so don’t stigmatize every diagnosis. It’s probably true that it’s being prescribed too much, but I know it’s saving my life.

Vyvanse was a total game changer for me. I dont take it on the weekend or if I am on vacation but it helps me calm down, focus and get stuff done. Alot of people don't realise stimulants have the opposite effect on people with ADHD. I get super sleepy after taking vyvanse and have to push through that. So I take it an hour before its time to get to work / school, and my grades and performance is much better then when I am unmedicated. I can calm down and focus on one task at a time

I'm so lucky to have a doctor that is actually trying to help me get off medication

The diagnosis of ADHD increased close to 300% in young adult females

There are people who genuinely need those meds. However, every overactive child with a slight focusing problem is drugged, and they become dependent on those drugs.
My mum decided to homeschool me and my siblings because the local schools required every student to be on drugs. It's insane.

I get prescribed for chronic fatigue/narcolepsy. When I say these help my day to day they really do. Medical issues causing fatigue are no joke.

Ive been diagnosed with many things from anxiety and depression to adhd. for a few years I was on all these medications and all they ever did was more harm than good. I finally just got off of everything. Ive now been dealing with my mental health by myself and it feels amazing. crazy

And it’s people who are misdiagnosed and wrongly prescribed stimulants that makes us folks who legitimately need it to survive look bad. I am so sick of the negative stigma attached to a medication I’m shamed for a legitimately medical need.

I have a son in his late 30's and when he was in Primary School they were super quick to put every misbehaving kid on Ritalin for ADHD. I had a stand up fight with a teacher who wanted my son medicated and I knew he did not have ADHD, she was just a lousy teacher. Btw, a psychiatrist I was talking to said that not every naughty kid had a syndrome - some kids are just little sh*ts!

Healthcare professional here, used to work in pharmacy, if your meds stop working it's because you developed a tolerance. Meaning they've been taking them too long or were abusing them, or it was never a right fit for them and their condition in the first place. Personally I benefit more from herbal supplements but do what works best for you. Find a doctor that advocates for you. I'm blessed to have a doctor that sat down with me for half an hour before making the decision that I don't need my ADHD meds, and that I'm better off exercising and eating right. Amazing.

i have adhd, and medication is literally the only thing that has helped
i was falling asleep in class and crying over math. i used to just lay on the floor doing nothing, because i couldn’t force myself
medicine has helped so much for me and there’s no way that i’d be passing any classes without it

If you have only dealt with normal procrastination, you will never understand how it feels to want to start or complete something but not be unable to do so.
How it feels to know you could do it well only if you have the motivation to work on it for any length of time

I get your point and you’re right in a lot of cases but coming from someone with extreme adhd without medication sometimes it’s very hard to focus of important tasks and it’s extremely frustrating

I was diagnosed with adhd at age 30 and the medication has changed my life for the better. I couldn’t sit and play with my toddlers before because my brain was pulling me every which way and I was missing so much because I couldn’t slow down! Luckily I don’t have terrible side effects from the meds I’m on. I am always looking for ways where I can work with my brain that doesn’t involve medication but for now the medication is making an incredible difference in my life and my kids lives. Usually people who say things about people not needing medication etc I assume they haven’t dealt with severe mental illness and don’t quite understand that sometimes you really do need medication to get out of the deep dark hole you’re in in order to get better. After that maybe you have developed the tools to get off meds.

They've been telling me I needed their drugs to be functional since I was 8 and I'm 33 and clean and still more productive than most people I know.

If u take an antidepressant that isn't helping u and Dr wants to 'supplement' it with an additional med... DON'T DO IT. It's a slippery slope. It's either the wrong antidepressant, or u don't need it anymore. True story...Dr was layering meds on me, I had too many. I stopped cold turkey and after withdrawal side effects, I actually felt BETTER than I did on meds that were supposed to make me feel better.

I was on Ritalin and eventually adderall from 4th grade til I was 18. It did not help, it kept me quiet, less fussy, and more compliant which my teachers and my mother thought it was supposed to do. Now I am 32 and I have finally gotten to a place where I have managed my anxiety and my lack of motivation that should have been developed as a kid. I don’t blame my parents, this is what they were told was right. I do blame the medical industry and the con artists within it.
