In this video, we’ll demonstrate how to remove and install the Moen 1224 Cartridge. It fits our Two-Handle faucets, which require two cartridges. Your situation may vary slightly, depending on the faucet model.

Really nice of moen to use a nice new faucet for display. One isn't built up with hard water and hard enough to take to people. One to pull the the cartridge and one to pry it with a screwdriver.

This is an excellent demo for putting a new cartridge in a new faucet. But I had to use every thing but dynamite to remove an old cartridge from an old faucet. And nobody makes a cartridge puller for the Moen 1224 cartridge! Guess who isn't going to make my next faucet!

Thanks, wasted my money on an unnecessary cartridge puller not needed for my faucet. This video matched my bathroom faucet perfectly

Thanks for this video! I had a local plumber quote me $250 in fees and trip charge to come out and replace 2 of these 1224 cartidges.

Cartridge 1224 B
1. Turn off water supply to that faucet handle.
2. Note the position of the faucet handle when water is off (i.e., hot water faucet points to 9 o’clock, and cold water faucet points to 3 o’clock.)
3. Turn base of handle counterclockwise and it unscrews from sink. Pull it off. It has threads on the inside that screw on to gold cylinder1 sticking out of sink. It also has a green cylinder2 inside the handle with splines on the inside that fit over the splines on the outside of red cylinder3 inside gold cylinder1.
4. Inside the red plastic splined cylinder3, unscrew the phillips head screw. Pull out red splined cylinder3 and the screw.
5. Here’s the trick: To remove the cartridge, you first have to unscrew a grayish-green cylinder4 plug that screws inside gold cylinder1 and holds in the cartridge. It is not an exposed nut. Moen makes a special cylindrical tool with slots on the end to unscrew the cylinder4 plug. But I forgot I had that tool and just used a regular screwdriver to unscrew the plug.
6. It’s non-trivial to get the old cartridge out of the hole. To get a grip on the cartridge to pull it out, I got an 8” piece of pipe strap. I put the phillips head screw through a hole in the middle of the pipe strap and screwed it back into the cartridge. Then I grabbed both ends of the pipe strap with a large pair of slip joint pliers and pulled hard. The old cartridge popped out.
7. Reassemble:
a. Put the new cartridge in.
b. Put red cylinder3 over the new cartridge.
c. I screwed this next step up initially. Rotate red cylinder3 so the longer part on the bottom aligns with the cartridge and avoids the raised part on the rim of the cartridge. This is what only allows the faucet handle to turn 90 degrees.
d. Screw in the phillips screw.
e. Fit the faucet handle over red cylinder3 with the handle pointing in the off position. Turn the base of faucet handle clockwise by hand onto gold cylinder1.
8. Turn water supply back on and test.

Have had this faucet for over 10 years. Took a bit of wiggling and some patience to get the old cartridge to come out. I thought about turning the water on with the cartridge nut removed to have the water pressure blow the cartridge out, but I figured that might be a little messy and/or dangerous ; ) - I'm glad Moen has the lifetime replacement, so you just have to call them and they'll send you a new pair of cartridges (even if you need only one).

If you have a brand new faucet sure you can pluck the cartridge right out. Try pulling a 5 year old cartridge covered with minerals and rust out. Unless you know how leverage works and you have a short 2x4 a long screw driver a pair of vice grips, and incredible strength in your hands you will be calling a plumber

Had a similar faucet to the one in the video. Was able to get the hot water cartridge out, but not the cold. The nut that secures the cartridge has very short flats so the wrench has a tendency to slip. The nuts are also stuck so getting them to start turning is a real challenge. The cartridge also has a tendency to stick. The cartridge is also plastic, so it is easily damaged. Some of this relates to sediment and calcium in our water. But the design could use some tweaking. I love Moen and most of my faucets are Moen. Their finish is exceptional and some are over 10 years old and still look new. Overall great design. I ended up buying a new Moen single handle faucet for my kitchen. Will see what happens when the cartridge requires replacement. Long before cartridge valves, I always found faucet repair is better left to a plumber.

My cartridge broke as I was trying to pry it out of the hole. I was unable to dig the broken piece out. So I unscrewed the water line underneath the sink, and was able to push the broken piece of cartridge out by hitting a screwdriver with a hammer against the broken piece from underneath.

Have an old "Banbury" model kitchen faucet that's probably getting near 10 years old. Thankfully, because Moen actually documents and supports their products, I was able to determined I needed the 1224 cartridges to stop the leak. Getting the handles off was bit of a problem due to an odd size grub screw that secures both handles. I was finally able to find a T-bit that grabbed and allowed the removal of the screw, but for awhile I was beginning to wonder if anything would catch. Secondly, the removal of the cartridge itself was not at all like the video. They were absolutely stuck! I had to revert to a little "caveman engineering" by using a large, long flat blade screwdriver combined with a hammer. I was able to angle it upward and just catch the bottom lip of the cartridge as it sat in its copper housing. Then, with the repeated application of brute force, was able to get the cartridge to start nudging up and outward from its housing. I wasn't easy, wasn't pretty, but it finally worked. Happy plumbing guys. 😊😊

My faucet uses the same cartridge but a different way to remove the handle. It has a screw that holds it down from the top once you remove the cover. Once removed I reinsert the screw back into the cartridge and with a pair of pliers I grip the head of the screw and pull up. It's alot easier to remove this way.

If you have trouble aligning the handle with the cartridge, use channel locks to rotate the stem of the cartridge.

Excellent demo and quick review of how to properly replace Moen 1224 cartridge. The included faucet is my exact model. Thanks!

Due to calcium buildup in the pipe, I was able to remove the cartridge only by reattaching the handle tightly with the set screw (after removing the cartridge nut) and pulling moderately hard. I was also only able to install the new cartridge the same way. Aligning everything and then pushing down on the cartridge with the handle attached. Don't forget to reattach the cartridge nut!

This demo shows pulling out a cartridge as being really easy. How do you remove it if the cartridge is stuck?

What if you can't remove the handle to get to the 1224? Nowhere to use an Allen wrench or Phillips head to remove the handle. Searched all over Moen's website and YouTube and can't find anything.

Thanks. I fixed the faucet but after a few days the handle seems to go further & further away turning when I try to stop the water! Do I need a new handle or the cartridge installation is not right. The handle is supposed to stop turning/ circling when it comes around half circle.

Pull the cartridge! Moen proceeds to hire Clark Kent for their demo.

I replaced a Moen 1224 cartridge in the hot side of my bathroom faucet which was dripping. It fixed the drip but 2 weeks later the drip is back. It only stops when I shut off the HOT shut-off valve under the sink. What can I do to fix this ?
