But the fact is that Raisi was riding in an aging American-made, Vietnam war-era Bell 212 helicopter. Raisi's chopper was part of a convoy of three. While the other two helicopters landed safely, his crashed. But why did Iran risk both president and foreign minister on the same helicopter? Raisi's Chief of Staff, who was in one of the two choppers that landed safely, said Raisi's aircraft disappeared during a cloud cover. Why did Raisi's pilot fly through the mountains when a detour around the range or to another destination might have been safer? And of course there is the question of who benefits the most from Raisi's death. The Iranian President was seen as the protege of Supreme Leader Khamenei, and was widely speculated to succeed the 85-year-old. Now with Raisi gone, the frontrunner to take over from Khamenei is his son Mojtaba.
