Iran’s President Raisi has died. What now?

Iranian President #Raisi had a long list of enemies, both from without and within. It is not unreasonable to question whether his colleagues conspired to eliminate him.

I can't believe we reached a point where Ahmadinejad is now seen as a reasonable guy.

Aircraft crashing in fog with high level government officials actually happens a lot happened to Polish president and a plane full of US ambassadors, the military pilots who fly these things have a crazy high risk tolerance and are trained to complete their mission at all costs and are trained to fly in conditions no passenger plane should. They view delaying or changing airports or go-arounds or adjusting course for weather as failing their mission. So they fly with 0 visibility close to the ground and crash.

The problem with democracy is Iran is the Guardian council, they disallow candidates of The Parliament and the Experts' assembly to run before the voting starts, that's why somethings never change

Unless the supreme leader position abolished... Nothing going to change...

One big mistake: There is no democratic part in Iranian regime. All apparently elected positions are controlled by the guardian council whose members are handpicked by the supreme leader. This way, the supreme leader engineers elections so only his people can run. There is something called approval of qualification in Iran for running for presidency ( or member of parliament or assembly of experts). The body which approves or disapproves one’s qualification is… you guessed it: the guardian council, which is unelected and handpicked by the supreme leader himself.

If I learned anything, it is that Iranian leaders have immaculate beards.

A game of thrones? Probably more like a feast for crows

It's kind of sad, the most popular guy is probably the one they won't choose. And since the Supreme Leader hasn't chosen his replacement, and with most thinking it will be his unpopular son, a lot of people will claim he's making a new dynasty that the revolution sought to overthrow.

The helicopter that the President was flying in was US-made and over 40 years old. The service life of a helicopter is ~20 years. I'm sure the Russians or Chinese (nominal allies of Iran) would have been happy to sell them a newer and more reliable helicopter.

As noted in this report, Iran has accused the US of continuing sanctions (which is true) denying them spare parts as an explanation for the crash, but stopped short of anything clearer.

In this report, I wonder why the the advanced age of the helicopter wasn't mentioned?

It's amazing how often autocracies call themselves 'stable' in comparison to democracies- until the inevitable question of succession finally rolls around.

Been watching for nearly a decade! It's hard to believe. I used to ask my wife to mail me transcripts of your new videos while I was away on long work trips. Thank you for all your hard work.

If this is the Iranian version of game of thrones, I'd HATE to see what the Iranian version of the Red Wedding look like.

What I’ve realised is that CaspianReport has never made a negative video about his own country of Azerbaijan.

House of Saud - Iran edition. Just a family ruling over things.

Uzbekistan went from an isolationist nation to a semi-globalised one after their President died in 2016.
Saudi is currently going through something similar with MBS making the nation unrecognisable from a decade ago.

Iran's Ayatollah structure seemingly ensures that a similar thing could never happen though.
With Ayatollah Khamenei turning 85 recently, it would be a surprise if there's even a small shift in foreign and domestic policy from his successor. The Assembly of Experts who elect the Ayatollah have allegedly already selected the next Ayatollah anyway.

Thank you Shirvan for responding to this event with a video and casting light!

I'm part of Iran's younger generation and I remember Raisi as the guy who consented to the physical and sexual harassment of my friends by the military. There were hundreds of university students kidnapped everyday for peaceful protest against the government's murder of girls.
