Hi, I am the son of two artists and began painting in my hometown of Richmond, Virginia before I could walk. I was a rare combination of artist and athlete so I moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to play football for USC. I left the team my sophomore year to focus on painting and filmmaking, applying the same focus and discipline from my football career to my art. I primarily work in oils, and spend most free days painting "en plein air" in my new home of Sarasota Florida.

Another outstanding, straightforward, no bs video that's chock full of common sense and insight. We can't thank you enough for your efforts to teach us to be independent informed painters.
Being able to hear the content without the distraction of background music is greatly appreciated. The full version of the newly released foundations course is probably the best tutorial available for folks just starting out. The difference between that course and all the others is that the students get to learn content that can be applied in multiple situations and is not just 'do this, then this, then this, etc'; it's not just a case of copying what the instructor did; there are good explanations as to why things need to be done. The man really does know how to teach!

When ever I hit a wall creatively I spend some time doing a small 8×10 copy of my favourite van gogh and it works miracles it's like a creative palette cleanse. I trust the choices he made even if it doesn't seem to make sense then at the end I be like aahh so that's why he chose that colour now it makes sense! It's also like a lesson in seeing all over again. Great recommendation!

Definitely do a video on composition. I don't really get it, I consider it when I consider it when I start but I don't think I know what I'm looking for. Also don't want my paintings to feel formulaic so I just assume it ain't Important. I dunno

Thanks for the continued content Chris- really informative and helpful to both watch and listen to you talk about how to improve. Appreciate how you make it easy for people at any skill level to pick up the brush and just start painting. Agree with others and would love to see some videos on composition. I always find it a challenge when starting a painting, depending on the genre of course, to decide whether I actually need to narrow down on a specific focal point vs not having one.

So awesome of you to post this information. I'm a self taught artist since I was 40. Started with colored pencil to ink to pastel to oil. I was very lucky to have an instructor who took an interest in me. He had a workshop after hours at a high school. You are very clear to understand. I just hit 70 this year and love oil painting but struggle with composition and with where to place the light.
