Should you use Head and Shoulders dandruff shampoo to treat acne? Dermatologist explains | #shorts

“Fungal acne” is a concept that comes up from time to time in my DMs and also in my clinic, so let’s discuss.
It’s technically not acne but I completely understand why people would refer to it that way. It’s certainly easier to say than Pityrosporum Folliculitis, which is the correct term to describe face and body pimples caused by fungus/yeast overgrowth.
Many times patients with this condition will have other signs of yeast overgrowth, such as dandruff. Also, Pityrosporum Folliculitis can be itchy, while classic acne should not be.
I think it’s okay to try and treat resistant face and body acne with these OTC anti-fungal washes, but keep in mind these can be more harsh on your skin barrier because they are not specifically formulated for facial skin. If they’re causing any irritation, of course do not continue use. Any persistent or scarring acne should be seen by a dermatologist!
It’s also worth noting that not all Pityrosporum Folliculitis gets better with topical anti-fungal treatments and occasionally oral anti-fungal medications are needed.
