At World's End — How to Build the Perfect Action Sequence | Film Perfection

With Birds of Prey Harley Quinn failing at being an impostor Jack Sparrow, let's travel back in time to take a look at the real Captain Jack Sparrow, this time in the trilogy conclusion, At World's End. While this movie might not be the most flawless movie overall, when it comes to the maelstrom ship battle action sequence at the very end with the Black Pearl going against the Flying Dutchman and Davy Jones, it does shine bright. Not only is it a great action set-piece, it's one of the greatest action set-pieces of all time. In today's Film Perfection, let's see what narrative elements it uses to make that happen. For a brief moment, let's return to a better time when Johnny Depp was still Captain Jack Sparrow and things were great. Here's hoping for one more, Pirates of the Caribbean 6 with him.

But Captain Jack Sparrow is one of the lords, and as long as he's stuck in Davy Jones' locker, Beckett and his nefarious armada are sure to emerge victorious. There's still hope, however, if the heroic team that includes Tia Dalma (Naomie Harris), Pintel (Lee Arenberg), and Ragetti (Mackenzie Crook) can reach exotic Singapore and convince vulpine pirate Sao Feng (Chow Yun-Fat) to provide them with charts and a ship. But even the powerful Brethren Court may need a bit of help from volatile sea goddess Calypso in order to weather the coming storm. With the entire future of the pirate way at stake, everyone will be forced to choose sides while drifting precariously to the edge of the earth for one final, spectacular battle.

Can we talk about how great a villain Davy Jones is?

His motivation is as understandable as you get: The guy just wants to live.

I think the cgi specially of Davy Jones is compared to the current movies still a masterpiece and absolutely stunning

Elizabeth: "This is madness!"
Jack: "This is politics."

Also Will is stabbed with the same sword he made himself for the commander.

The reason I love this final action sequence is because you get to see Jack be Jack in all of his glory. You see the clever side of Jack when he tricks Jones into exposing the key. You see the goofy side of Jack when he's spinning Jones around and then runs off. You see the escapist side of him when he swings up onto the mast. Plus, you see a new side of him in the form of him showing that he actually does care when Will gets stabbed. You get to see all sides of Jack in one sequence which doesn't really happen in any other movie from what I can recall.

Davy Jones: "You can do nothing without the key!"
Jack: "I already have the key."
Davy Jones: "No ya don't." *shows key*
Jack: "Congratulations: you played yourself."

I also love Beckett's end. He believes he has played Jack successfully and is ready to finally rid himself of the menace. Only to find it was he who was played. "Does he plan it all out or does he just make it up as he goes along?" Yes....

People can say what they want but Pirates Of The Caribbean is one of those movie series which you can watch again and again and it’ll still hold it’s charm.

Also Will being stabbed in the heart, by the sword he made himself, to give to his crushes father, who gives it to his rival to Elizabeth's heart.
Even the blade had a history.

The best part of this movie is the story between Davy Jones and Calypso. A true Shakespearian tragedy and a great symbolism about sailors' love for the sea

"Forgettable is something you don't want your movie to be remembered for." Well that's a paradox and a half.

Didn’t even talk about the conclusion, when the pearl is going to face the night of the British navy, seemingly alone and then you see the Dutchman come up with will as captain to face it with him

You forgot to mention: when Jack steals the pistol from the grunt he uses the grip as a club, which was the payoff set up by Pintel and Ragetti after the Mexican standoff between jack, will, barbossa, and Gibbs ended with the fact that their pistols wouldn’t work because they had wet gun power. Pintel said “hey, we can still use them as clubs” and ragetti then hit Pintel on the head with the pistol like Jack did in that scene. It’s something a lot of people probably missed, but it’s just another example of a payoff happing in that sequence that i thought was worth noting.

There's also this exchange in a deleted scene:
Beckett: Remarkable. Last I saw of that ship, she was on fire. A blackened hull, sinking beneath the waves. We had a deal, Jack. I contracted you to deliver cargo on my behalf, you chose to liberate it.
Jack: People aren't cargo, mate.
Beckett: And you incurred a heavy debt to raise her up again, didn't you?
It makes me wish this deleted scene did make it into the final cut, because it adds a layer of depth to Jack's character (adding to that caring nature you were talking about in the video) as well as establishes his relationship with Cutler Beckett, as well as implies that he is the reason for Jack's debt with Jones, his turn to piracy, and even the Black Pearl itself, which would have given him a much greater presence in the franchise, I think.
