👩🏽‍💻 I'm Dr. Becky Smethurst, an astrophysicist at the University of Oxford (Christ Church). I love making videos about science with an unnatural level of enthusiasm. I like to focus on how we know things, not just what we know. And especially, the things we still don't know. If you've ever wondered about something in space and couldn't find an answer online - you can ask me! My day job is to do research into how supermassive black holes can affect the galaxies that they live in. In particular, I look at whether the energy output from the disk of material orbiting around a growing supermassive black hole can stop a galaxy from forming stars.

Whenever I see an astronomy headline from a major news network, I don't even bother reading it. I wait for Dr. Becky to put out a video to explain to us what is ACTUALLY happening. Thank you for all your wonderful insights and telling us the truth!

This is a very good way to catch up on news in Astronomy and Astrophysics. Thank you Doctor .👍

Thank you for always telling the facts about JWST and it’s “possible” oldest galaxies. This is why I follow you!

It’s amazing to think that we are seeing back almost 9 billion years before the earth was even formed.

Once again, Dr. Becky proves she is the current day "Carl Sagan" of our time! You have such a great way of describing things that make them understandable, without making the rest of us feel like idiots! Thank you for all that you do.

Thanks Dr. Becky featuring my picture. I am honored!

Just to say it more clearly: Redshift is not measured on a logarithmic scale, it is in a logarithmic relation to light travel time.
This may seem like a minor difference in wording, but this relation is so interesting that you could make an episode about it. About why the CMB is even beyond infrared. Which epochs JWST can and can not observe even with a deep field. Which future telescopes we need.

As a content creator for space videos, and importantly someone who hasnt got a degree in astrophysics... I really appreciate your insights Dr Becky. You really help grow my understanding, and I appreciate that so much. I only found your channel recently but I know I'll be a long term viewer❤

Thank you for the distinction between headlines and science. The public is often swayed to believe that these attention catching studies represent established scientific fact when they havnt been confirmed yet. The current controvery around multiple T-Rex species being an excellent example in paleontology.

Boy, howdy, how I do relate to knees being too old to be down on the floor and folded up for long! Thanks for all the great science and entertainment! You are a true treasure!

Thank you! It is so important that someone takes the hype down and manages people's expectations. Yeah, these findings are extremely cool if they are confirmed, but they are not yet, and they totally may be found to be lower-redshift galaxies.

I'm glad you did this, thank you!

I've been viewing your YouTube vids for a while now, and decided to go ahead and subscribe. Especially with the JWST now in operation, it seems that there should be some exceedingly interesting developments in the coming months and years in the field of cosmology. Thanks for your efforts to inform us laypersons regarding this fascinating stuff.

I`m not native english-speaking person myself, and I`m in love with Your accent or what-else makes You sound so clear to me, Doctor!
I can understand everything and watch your videos without rewinds. I see You as a real part of the global Enlightenment team!

Thank You. I look forward to your Night Sky News in the same way I was excited to see my Sky and Telescope mag back in the day. You fill a valuable niche here.

The stellar-mass black hole in the LMC caught my attention about a week ago, but the popular media reports were horribly confusing. Thank you for giving us a good, coherent report.

Dr. Becky, you are totally amazing. Keep up the good work. Always refreshing to watch you talk about what has been a long-standing interest of mine since I was a kid. Black

Dr Becky, I am so impressed by the amount international involvement and collaboration with the JWST and how so much data is being released already. Does this represent a step change to the degree of available information to independent scientists and the public?
It seems to me also that the amount of information and insight available to the arm chair observer has mushroomed since the Higgs Boson.
Well done!

I'm glad YouTube recommended this channel to me. The videos are very informative.

After watching this one, I actually searched on how to become an astrophysicist. I was thinking it would be an enjoyable job going through all the data collected by the different instruments on JWST, and other telescopes, and combine them into one large library. It'd also be interesting to just go through the raw data to find and classify different objects automatically, if possible. I then remembered, physics and I didn't get along very well in university. I'd have to brush up on my math skills, too many years since I integrated anything!

Keep up the great work, Dr. Becky Smethurst!

I'm waiting for Webb to see past the Big Bang to show the Big Foreplay.

It's so lovely to watch a video from Dr. Becky the same day you heard your neighbor say the earth was flat and the planets are just little light bulbs stuck on the celestial roof
