👩🏽‍💻 I'm Dr. Becky Smethurst, an astrophysicist at the University of Oxford (Christ Church). I love making videos about science with an unnatural level of enthusiasm. I like to focus on how we know things, not just what we know. And especially, the things we still don't know. If you've ever wondered about something in space and couldn't find an answer online - you can ask me! My day job is to do research into how supermassive black holes can affect the galaxies that they live in. In particular, I look at whether the energy output from the disk of material orbiting around a growing supermassive black hole can stop a galaxy from forming stars.

The JWST has definitely Not disappointed! I didn't think I would live long enough to see it get launched, then if it would even work, but now, Wow, it was certainly worth the wait.

Those images are just stunning! The JWST is worth every penny that was spent on it. Jaw-dropping resolution as well!

Awesome! Kinda left us in a cliffhanger there with that weird thing that has moved in between the Hubble image and now. Can't wait to hear about that.

I really love that James Webb telescope is becoming a celebrity science equipment. He really deserves the praise and attention.

Anyone else get depressed when you see beautiful galaxies so far away there is no way we can ever visit? JWST = Galaxy tease. 😿

I still remember in Carl Sagan's "Cosmos, " him describing ring galaxies as the results of a head-on collision between two galaxies. I seem to recall him referring to them as "the rarest of jewels." :-)

If your excitement about these new discoveries accelerates your rate of speeach any further, I may have to start slowing down your videos to understand what you're saying!! Lovely to see your enthusiasm though!!

When galaxies collide, have there been predictions on the percentage of mass that actually collide (planets, star, etc physically impacting)?

Is anyone else worried about the cumulative damage micrometeoroids will have on the jwst? I understand it’s been hit several times already.

I don't know if I like this style of videos to discuss a topic like that. Getting stressed while watching a video about astronomy is the last thing that I want.

I swear she's talking faster
every time I watch it.
Incredible skill 👍

Thank you, even if it wasn't your intent, for making this video one minute and one second, just long enough that it doesn't play in YouTube's awful shorts player. I would recommend comparing revenue after a few weeks with your other shorts. A lot of creators are finding the minute and one second videos make them considerably more money even when done accidentally.

What everyone is really waiting for is Dr Becky's reaction to the Chorizo star! 💫

Is Dr. Becky talking faster, or are my ears getting slower?

Any chance Milkdromeda will eventually look like that? I hate the idea of our beautiful spiral galaxy ending up as a huge boring blob
