JWST finds most distant galaxy? MAYBE, but not quite… #shorts

👩🏽‍💻 I'm Dr. Becky Smethurst, an astrophysicist at the University of Oxford (Christ Church). I love making videos about science with an unnatural level of enthusiasm. I like to focus on how we know things, not just what we know. And especially, the things we still don't know. If you've ever wondered about something in space and couldn't find an answer online - you can ask me! My day job is to do research into how supermassive black holes can affect the galaxies that they live in. In particular, I look at whether the energy output from the disk of material orbiting around a growing supermassive black hole can stop a galaxy from forming stars.

Thank you for keeping us grounded in this time of sensationalism and click-bait.

Love that we can engage with scientists every day. Love it.

Pretty much anytime says they’ve found the oldest or farthest thing in astronomy there should be an asterisk (*) & a footnote saying something to the effect “That we know of today, but it’s entirely possible there’s data out there with older/farther objects because there’s a Lot of data.”

It'll be interesting to see just how far we can push this telescope.

The first few images from the JWST have been mind blowing and the number of firsts even more so. The JWST launch was so successful as it used less fuel than expected the net effect is that we might be getting images from JWST for the next twenty years which blows my mind! To all those involved with the JWST and those who will be joining the project over hopefully the next two decades BRAVO!!!

Still promising that they right away get a candidate for oldest galaxy. Hope JWST survives all that space debris for at least a few years.

I can't wait to see JWST get new images of the Pillars of Creation!

The Hubble telescope is actually still a very useful instrument and we shouldn't forget that. For 30 years it's given us amazing images and surprises that we never thought possible before. Long live the Hubble.

I am still amazed how you scientists haven't fainted from excitement from the JWST becoming fully operational
