This is not an American sketch, Harry Enfield is British. I don't understand how you can come to the conclusion it's American when just searching the guys name tells you he's British.

Speaking as a British person, I love the German people. I feel we have more in common than we realise.

He is English, not American. But don't worry, i wouldn't expect a Belgian to know the difference.

I want to tell you a story about my dad who fought in WW2.
My dads regiment (the Black Watch) had captured some German soldiers and were escorting them along a road.
A big German sergeant who spoke good English had a German Shepherd dog & asked my dad to take it so it wouldn't be shot. He also gave my dad his address in Munich.
My dad took the dog back to England & gave it to his neighbour whilst on leave.
The war ended 2 months later & my dad checked on the dog & found the mans kids riding it around the garden like a horse.
He wrote to the German guy to let him know that the dog was fine & loved by the family.
They kept in touch, sending photo's & letters back & forth Until my dad died aged 86.
At his funeral we noticed a man sitting at the back of the chapel crying. When we asked who he was he introduced himself. We all hugged him & invited him back to my sisters house. He was such a lovely guy.
We joke & take the piss out of each other about the war & stereotypes, but we have to draw a line in the sand & move on. This is how we evolve, unlike the middle east who are still dragging up old conflicts & living in the bronze age.
We can't be held responsible for the actions of our forefathers.

I think it's especially funny because it's a British show. Some English people, especially in the south, are a bit awkward about starting up conversations with strangers, so it adds to the awkwardness of the situation. They are being outwardly polite but also thinking, "Why is this person talking to me?"
It would have been different as an American show.

I spent 6 years in Germany as a squaddie. I love Germany; it is a chilled, welcoming country with a great sense of humour. The Nights out in Germany are legendary. Schnell Imbiess are prima!

Back in the days we were allowed to laugh at everything 😂
I remember them well and miss classic British comedy.

I've only spent one week in Germany, but everybody I met was really appreciative of my feeble attempts to speak German, all spoke English excellently and were happy to switch to English whenever they could tell I was struggling.

Extremely polite and friendly people.

My grandad wasnt happy. He went on a bombing raid over Germany but when he got home he was arrested. Though to be fair it was in 1971.

It has long been a British-held stereotype of the Germans that they are humourless and punctillious. This stereotype has been utterly destroyed by the recent excursion of a German naval warship up the Thames river, which played the Imperial March from Star Wars. This was not only humour, it was humour so fucking dark that it was nearly British! I guarantee about a million Londoners within earshot of the loudspeakers were pissing themselves laughing when they heard it was Jerries who were doing it.

You mate are a good sport. Humour is at its funniest best when it’s edgy and controversial. And the ability to laugh at yourself is a gift 👍🏻

As an Englishman, I always find it a little amusing when people feel bad about having an accent when speaking English. Anyone who knows England knows that you only have to drive 10 miles down the road to hear a different accent in English, spoken by the English.

The actor, Harry Enfield, who played Yurgen got the idea from the character when he went to Spain on holiday in the early 90s. He says he spent a lot of time with a group of Germans who, rather than avoiding the war, kept asking him questions about it, because it was such a taboo subject in their country at the time.
