2023 BYD Atto 3/Yuan Plus (inc. 0-100) detailed review: Why I'd buy this EV!

Yes, you read it right. I'd buy this EV. I went into this review thinking the BYD Atto 3 (also known as the BYD Yuan Plus) would be a bit of a stinker, but came out of it at the other end blown away by how much value you get from it. You'd be bonkers to spend another $30k on a base Tesla Model 3.

Just on 3 phase charging. A few people have mentioned that it doesn’t have it, but the importer has assured us it has. Not sure who to believe! So tread with caution.

UPDATE 25 July 2023: BYD contacted us with the following statement regarding charging.
"BYD ATTO 3, BYD Dolphin and BYD Seal in Australia and New Zealand can achieve single-phase charging power of 7 kW (AC)"
"BYD Electric Vehicle models available in Europe are equipped with three-phase charging power of 11kW (AC)"

My parents just bought one of these and they drive great, feels like a lot more expensive car and fully EV on top!?, I was impressed.

I think the most attractive thing about BYD is the blade battery, although most people will not encounter danger, but sometimes it can really save your life

There’s actually a 3rd top tether point hidden underneath the fabric in the boot if you feel for it. No idea why it effectively needs to be cut out of the fabric but it’s actually there. Only thing missing from the review was mention of the mess of the rollout as far as warranty, servicing and now delivering of cars. But the car itself seems great. Nothing else comes close at this price point for an EV. Parents are picking one up and I was genuinely surprised when I checked it out in person. Prefer my Tesla but it’s good that cheaper EV options are coming. Great review Paul.

Got my Atto 3 a week ago, love it! Ride is good, tech is good and it looks awesome! I charge it with a 1 phase 7kW Ocular wall charger. Doesn't miss a beat. Cheers for the great video, I always learn something new.

My brother bought one couple of weeks ago. What a great car, absolutely impressive.

Made final payment on mine today. Glad to see you reviewed the blue as this is the colour I chose, looks great. Love the quirky guitar strings. Can’t wait to pick it up.

I saw this car in Chadstone shopping centre (Vic). I have say the real thing looks way better than in the videos. The fit and finish looks cheap in the videos, but in real life it feels like a mercedes A class, and the ambient lighting is good too. I am thinking of buying one for driving around town and charge it up using solar.

Paid my deposit at the end of September - can't wait to get hold of the car, though I'm told to expect it in Feb/Mar 2023.
Thanks for a great review, which has only whetted the appetite further. Currently driving MGZSEV which I love, but the Atto 3 leaves it in the dust!

Here in Costa Rica we have this one priced around $50k, also the Tang around $70k, the Han $80k and like the smaller sibling of this Atto (here is named Yuan Plus) which is the Yuan Pro priced around $38k... All of them come with a 6 year warranty for the car itself and 8 years for the battery and you get a L2 charger and J1172 adapter.

Such a comprehensive review, well done! Now that BYD has come to Europe, just waiting for the Euro NCAP safety rating results on 12 October, if it's 4 stars above then I am considering to get one next year!

Good review. Had my Atto for a few days now. Really love it. It's a 'cheap' EV bit definitely not a cheap car. Brilliant engineering.

Just spent three days with an Atto 3 in Auckland and environs and was mightily impressed when compared to Tesla and Polestar. Was super economical at about 15.4kW per 100km - way better than the Polestar I tried mid last year which struggled to better 23kW/100km. Bang for buck well worth it in NZ where, after clean car rebate, it is only a little over $50k. Can't wait for the BYD Seal to arrive later this year to compare to my BMW 3 series.

It comes with a NFC card like a credit card that allows you to unlock/lock the vehicle and drive it as well once you place it against the driver's side mirror with the NFC logo.

Been waiting for this one for a while. Great review, Mr. Maric!
Super keen to see what the Seal is like when it lands. Overseas walkarounds look promising. Just hoping the top spec dual motor is less than 70k driveway and BYD see sense and get rid of the awful warranty and EVDirect partnership.

You always test the rear camera (9:36) in your reviews, which is great. But while you're there, try reversing into the case to demonstrate rear autonomous braking. One more step, try walking behind the car to test cross-traffic alert. You'll add a lot of useful information for little additional effort.

$30K USD for this package!! It would easily beat the competitors if it was sold here in the US, well, guess that's not gonna happen due to obvious reasons

I have had mine for 2 weeks. Love it. Still learning all the ins and outs. Voice control assistance to turn on and off many things including finding closest EV charge station. Airconditioning in QLD has me worried. Its slow in getting the cold air going when its been hot. Also the cloth sunroof liner... hoping it traps out the heat from the large sunroof. Time will tell.

Great review Paul.

Personally whilst i do like it i would wait until the debacle is a bit more sorted.

I would also hope that in the near future they swap out the tyres for something of quality. Having to fork out another $1k for new tyres straight away is a sore point.

Build quality over time will be interesting to see as well.

However I do applaud BYD for getting this vehicle here at this price point and it will sell.

It looks well put together. In terms of interior design, its good to see that they are trying to find their own design language. It's one of those brands that will be very strong once they find that sweet spot between design and simplicity.
