In my country, carpenter is a word used to signify anyone working with wood. It is possible that there are other countries that also treat the word like that. So that might also be a cause of confusion.

In Germany there is a Zimmerman(carpenter) and the Tischler( what you and me are doing ). So in school i learned that it’s called joiner .

As far as I'm concerned, you're a carpenter. Keep up the good work man!

In Scotland a joiner works with large amounts of wood on building sites etc. where as a carpenter works with smaller amounts of wood to make furniture and cabinets etc.

I am not interested in woodwork but there is something about the way you do your videos that make them enjoyable to watch during my morning coffee. Thanks for taking the time to do them.

my mentor used to tell me:
"a cabinet maker can do a carpenter's job, but a carpenter can't do a cabinet maker's job", i was a carpenter moving from a stair-fitter's shop to a furniture shop he worked at.
he took me under his wing and tried to pass on what he could. upon saying this, he followed it up with something along the lines of "there are certain things that distinguish us from them, its not hostile or rude to admit one job requires just a liiittttle more attention than the other." while he was saying this, he was systematically twisting every screw head in a cabinet's hinges to line up with the grain direction and make every screwhead line up perfectly.
it stuck with me because to this day, nothing i ship out doesnt line up. everything is flat, square and lined up. and im thankful for the things he taught me.
if you're wanting to be a cabinet maker, learn to be picky, learn to be semantic, pragmatic and awkward to deal with. because thats what the job needs.

An old friend of mine, we basically grew up together. His father was a master mason, a wood worker. At one point he was head of the carpenters lodge. I never understood what it all meant when I was young.

It's only now that I'm older I realise what a special man and unique resource I had within arm's distance. Eventually he passed away and i never even asked him one question about woodworking.

I teach furniture making, make pieces of furniture and videos. And I've put them in order of income.
Rex. I think you're a YouTuber, and then a maker of pieces to use for content.
And as you say, there's room for all of us. #woodworking is alive and well. Keep up the good work 👍

In Canada being a Carpenter is a catchall term for 157 different trades lumped into a single professional label. So if you work with wood, scaffolding, or concrete, you're generally considered a carpenter. It also means it's very hard to draw any kind of equivalency between different carpenters.

I love how you always make sure to be welcoming and vocal about how people are different and there’s nothing wrong with that. You are such a bright and lovely person

The problem I have is.. Im a very experienced carpenter/joiner/cabinet maker( I know how to make things out of wood to a very high standard or when it's appropriate to just hit things with a hammer) yet the vast majority of people I interact with.. assume or understand that to mean that I am a handyman.

Building furniture and refinishing furniture including building wooden toys is definitely a joyful thing for me. I can build shelter and I have before when I used to live in NorCal near Tahoe area

in Danish we have Tømrer (carpenter/people that frame houses) then we have snedker that can be separated into 3 different versions.
møblesnedker (furniture maker) bygningssnedker (people that makes stairs, fit kitchen cabinets and more) and lastly maskinssnedker (makes windows, doors and operates wood CNC machines)

In our shop, the reference surface is the tables of the big jointer. All in all that needs to be the flattest thing in the shop anyway so it makes sense for us! The workbenches only need to be roughly even enough.

As a carpenter who knows how to do structures, I have no clue how to do what you do. Love the content.

LOL, I’m a software engineer who builds large-scale systems, which everyone I know seems to interpret as: “You can help me fix my computer”, which is something I know next to nothing about 😂
