Tech’s DIALOGUE With OUR Kids

preview_player
Показать описание
Bo Burnham discusses social media and how there is a growing concern around the fact that the technology we use is uniquely adapted to our wants versus our needs, including a growing shift to focusing on directly talking to kids 13-17 years. In the new age, technology gives your children direct 24/7 access to almost any media they want to consume (or algorithm into), instead of the recent past where parents controlled this incoming media through television.

When Bo Burnham refrains from sarcasm and self depreciation [deprecation -ed], you know it's serious.

Glad that really intense sad piano music was added. Never would have understood how serious this was otherwise.

Bo Burnham was patient zero for the internet.

The shit I saw on msn messenger when they started doing video chats was wild. I can’t even imagine what this generation goes through

When I was a 13 year old I was pretending I was Aragorn, walking around in the woods.

I'll be honest, when he says it like that, it makes me feel like snapchat is disgusting. Even though I started using it when I started high school, I never once thought of a bunch of old business men trying to sell a product whose main use was underage users sending pics of themselves.

Like we all knew that we could use it for that, but it's a bit different when you realize the business owners probably knew too.

Internet needs a Mr. Rogers. Not just a show. He fought for entertainment for kids being required to be informative, and educational.

I remember when Snapchat was becoming popular in school one of my teachers straight up told us that the app was originally designed for nudes. That's why the photos delete themselves.

Wow I just gained some serious respect for Bo Burnham.

Another aspect of this is that family consume less of the same media than generations past. Where kids might have watched shows in reruns that their parents watched live or view movies on VHS that their parents saw in theaters they now have completely different media begin consumed. I believe this widens the disconnect between the generations and that the wider that gap gets the more it will become a problem.

Everyone who used social media before they were 21 needs to recognize this. You were partially raised by corporations, and therefore your interests are likely to serve their interests.

The fact is most parents either don't care what their kids do online or they don't have the knowledge to know what they're doing. Social media is poison for children. Hell, it's poison for adults!

Damn, here I am waiting for the punch line, when he was actually dropping it the whole time.

They don't "need to step up" they need to be investigated for allowing this access to children for years

Damn. Love it when comedians have to be the ones in our society to drop truth bombs.

And content is packaged in an addictive manner. We're all scrolling, but it's particularly rough on kids.

Never expect someone to "Step up" when its in their best interest to do what theyre already doing
