3 Medicare Enrollment Mistakes to Avoid
Missing Your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP)
Your IEP is a 7-month window that begins three months before the month you turn 65, includes your birth month, and extends three months after. If you miss this period, you might have to wait to sign up, which could result in a gap in your coverage and possible late enrollment penalties.
Assuming You Don’t Need Medicare at 65
Before delaying Medicare enrollment, you need to know if the coverage you will be getting, usually through your employer or your spouse’ employer, is considered “creditable coverage”.
If you don’t have health coverage from current employment (yours or your spouse’s), you should sign up for Medicare during your IEP to avoid late enrollment penalties and coverage gaps. If you delay and use employer coverage, you should still do a cost comparison.
Not Getting Prescription Drug Coverage
If you sign up for Medicare when you're first eligible and you don't add creditable prescription drug coverage (Part D or Medicare Advantage), you may have to pay a late enrollment penalty. This penalty is added to your Medicare Part D premium for as long as you have Medicare drug coverage.
