New 'Worlds Cheapest 35mm Film' Coming Soon?

There's a new 35mm film coming soon that claims to be the "World's Cheapest Film". By soon, I mean we could be seeing it by June this year. Lucky Film is a film company that has a history and legacy producing film, and even worked hand in hand in Kodak for film production for many years. Because of this, I'm confident that Lucky will be able to release something that rivals some of the higher quality budget film stocks out there on the market in 2025. Reflx Lab recently put out a blog post explaining ghe progress Lucky has been making, but that is not an easy one. For me, as an American, I'm not fully anticipating this to be the cheapest film for me, but rather, the Eastern Hemisphere. Which, personally, I'm cool with; any new film products that enables more people to shoot, is a good one.

What do you think about this news? Let me know down in the comments!

I live in China and bought a few rolls of the first batch of Lucky 400. It was a disaster. Light leaks. Scratches. I threw the rolls away. I need to test the film again to see if they fixed their ramp-up problems.

The affordability part of this film seems to be a very encouraging factor but I can't help but wonder if it will really be that cheaper than other colored film stocks? As the post said, making new color film is a very complicated process with many materials required not being readily available this days. Wouldn't that drive up the cost a bunch? Or does it mostly depend on other factors such as shipping, taxes, tariffs etc...?

Thanks for the update, really love your quick videos to catch me up to speed on the latest film photography news. Cheers!

ah this makes sense and reminds me why the harman phoenix sometimes has a red-ish hue, the color to perfect color film is so tedious it's hard to do- who knew !
Can't wait to try it, and have a cheap but good color film again in the market.

I will so happily shoot this exclusively, regardless of its quality really, if it's cheap and in colour it will be exactly what I want, as a photographer in the UK I already rely on Ilford for B&W and wouldn't even consider Kodak for anything but colour, I would be happy to be able to ignore them as a company entirely

Considering lucky b&w cant be found online ( even on aliexpress) for less than $10 ( thats double kentmere or arista ) then i doubt the color film will be as cheap as you say

Currently living in China and I can get my hands on a roll of SHD 100/400 for about $3.50 per roll including shipping. Comparing prices to what I can see on Amazon it feels like film is slightly cheaper in China (maybe $3-5 USD per roll on average?). One of the shops that I buy frequently on Taobao (Chinese Amazon sort of) has their own physical store in Shanghai, and its even cheaper if I go there directly, maybe another $1.50 USD discount per roll.

Where on earth is the Lucky SHD100/400 $2 each, here in the EU the price + shipping and taxes ... well, it becomes one of the most expensive B&W film stocks, please don't get me wrong, I like your video, It's awesome but please do your research better.

Upvote for reference to Voldemort. Also curious to see how the tariffs will affect affordability

TBO, Lucky B&W film stocks don't have stable quality compare to European manufactures like Foma and Ilford.According to one of my friend who shot some SHD100, the film have a strange smell and often found white dots and other issues. In China it's just a bit cheaper than FOMAPANs and I choose to shoot FOMAPAN anyway.

It'll be interesting to see if they could develop a film stock to compete with Kodak Portra 400 in 120.

Global prices of the Lucky SHD black and white film is $6-8, similar to Kentmere film prices.

I will buy the colored version partly out of spite for Kodak. 😆

I was born an American, I'll die an American. Kodak all the way. That said, some competition may make them rethink some of their bonehead decisions that they've made lately.
