Spongebob actually had some attitude and a sharp edge on him then, in this season. He can be seen visibly growling and fussing and ranting when angry. That went away for awhile

Just saying, that angler fish was the GOAT of this episode. And this episode shows really well how, when you're at your lowest point, you can find help in the most unexpected of places.

Also, notice how said angler fish responds at the end with "You're welcome" with *no* raspberry noise, and how he looks a lot more *normal* than the rest of Rock Bottom...

What I love about SpongeBob is the amount of liminal spaces, Rock Bottom in general is such an atmospheric area even with us only seeing the Bathroom, Bus Stop, and 90 degree wall. Games delve into this area further, but even at this minimal amount, there is a certain feel to these older episodes that help with world building.

Roads are not a straight lines, right? So here's an alternative explanation: It's the same bus driver returning and driving in a circle to mess with Spongebob, like the one visual gag with the cars in Top Secret! (80's comedy).

I always loved the wholesome ending with that fish, what makes it even more mystical weird or some word i dont know is that we never see that fish ever again, its just so unforgetable for me

Patrick wouldn't leave SpongeBob behind on purpose - but he probably would do it without thinking things through. Don't forget how he also walloped SpongeBob with his rock when dreaming about spiders in the other episode.
I just think the driver had enough after getting smacked by the balloon, kicked them off, and radio'd the other drivers on how much trouble SpongeBob would be as a passenger.

I Love those old SpongeBob episodes, they are funny and interesting. It is no surprise the driver is so mad after all the hits.
The whole rockbottom situation feels so different between another episodes but this made it so Spechial. Lol the green fish was a busdriver and after a while he eat the chum bucket stuff.
