Why I chose Engineering over Medicine

Engineering vs medicine is a big decision for most students. For me, I started out wanting to be a doctor, but quickly realized I should be an engineer instead. If you are wondering about being an engineer vs. doctor, this video should clarify it

Biomedical engineering is essentially the mix between engineering and medicine.

I majored in physics (B.S., M.S.) and mathematics (B.S.) in college and then went to med school. Practiced emergency medicine for 38 years and when I retired took up electronics as a hobby. Studied circuits, electronics, control systems theory, transmission lines, signals and systems, did some Matlab programming (had taught myself C many years ago) etc. often wondered how things would have been different had I chosen EE instead of physics as my major. Certainly made a lot more money in medicine but that was not important to me.

I knew medical was a lot of work and effort and I am not a people person and when I do talk with people I like having logical/analytical conversation so I knew engineering was always for me. I must be one of the few who just knew generally what I wanted to since I was young and had no regrets or new outlooks to change my mind. Probably because I had specific questions in my mind I wanted answered since elementary school and I just kept following the path to have those questions answered.

Im about to finish Medical school in a few months, but I really like Engineering.I like to study how things work and how it fits together. I think orthopedics would be perfect for me. But I would still love to study and learn about cars, engines, structures like bridges, rockets etc and apply the design, principles and structural aspects to the human body in the form of surgery. I'd also use this knowledge to publish research papers and maybe start my own company.Idk🤷‍♂️. But i really love engineering as well.

I was a solutions architect and then software engineer at FAANG. I didn’t find the work to be fulfilling at all and layoffs were constant. I went back to school and now I’m finishing up plastic surgery residency with a job already secured for $700k a year + bonus. It’s hard to make that kind of money in tech unless you’re principal or staff level at FAANG. Medicine is fantastic. Yes it’s a hard road to get there but what I’ve learned that anything that has a low barrier to entry will eventually get flooded with an over supply of people; just look at what’s happening to tech now.

I'm an Electrical Engineering major, when I was kid I always wanted to be an Engineer (or electronics related field), but as I grew older I saw I realized the amount of prestige and money a physician gains, plus I always loved biology. I really wanted to go for it, but unfortunally my score was too low in my entrance exam nor I'm rich to pay for a medical school... WElp I guess I had to stick in my kid career.

For me I’m studying computer science but wanted to be a doctor from child hood than around 17 made a career decision that I kind of regret I want to go back to medicine but live in the uk where it’s almost impossible for non traditional students and I can’t afford going abroad

I considered similar points when I choose electronics engineering over medical fields even though I loved biology but I didn't knew in medical field memorization is needed as I thought medical courses have more practical stuff. Anyways in electronics I've to memorize equations and other things which I don't like to be honest😑.

This is literally the opposite for me. 18 years of software engineering. About to go medical. Engineer way more thinking than medical and ruined by business men.

You can look into Physician Assistant. I am in EE, but I went to PA school for a little over 2 years and got certified and as a PA i can choose any specialty, but I chose emergency medicine because it was more fulfilling, I am at the frontline diagnosing and prescribing treatment, I only consult my supervising MD if the condition is beyond my expertise.

Medicine is usually a 6 years bachelors degree around the world, and residency is not always mandatory.

Medicine is definitely not for me, diseases and injuries stress me out too much. Just looking at or even thinking for too long about broken bones, or bloody injuries makes me feel sick and faint. My stepuncle is a surgeon, and some of the surgeries he describes make my skin crawl, stuff like wires going from your leg to your heart. As well, I way orefer problem solving to memorization

Hello, currently I am kinda stuck between three careers lol. They all are different from each other. I am stuck between getting a business degree with a minor in sustainability, being an environmental engineer, or being a critical care nurse. Honestly, my passion is helping the environment; I'm just not sure if I want to make it a career.

Hi, I've stuck in same problem
I have given talent tests and every each of them said that I'm good at my current field "computer engineering" and suitable for medical fields since I was child I used to be so interested in biology stuff and how brian works and I like creating things too! I really likr the academic atmosphere and I don't know what to choose and have doubt about my goals what would you recommend further?

Did you shadow surgeons and anesthesiologists? A lot of the cushier/niche specialties are kept hush from pre-med students.

is there leeway between electrical and medicine tho, because you were talking about how the brains electrical output can be meddled with by knowing the intricacies of electrical engineering
