If you teach a child how to memorize a word, how many words do they know? Instead, let’s focus on teaching them how to READ those words on their own. And parents, if you need help with that, I’ve got you covered. 💪🏽

Exactly! Phonics needs to be a huge part of reading education. Yes, there ARE some words you just HAVE to know that doesn't follow the rules. But that should be the exception.

Wow a parent involved in educating their child instead of bitching that teachers aren't doing it. Good for you sir. Assisting the teacher is the best way for your child to learn

You have no idea how validating this is. I felt so stupid in second grade when I still couldn’t read because my teachers were so focused on the concept of sight words😭

That look is for the impatient souls that think the child should be able to look at the word and just know it and memorize it.

that's exactly how my mom taught me how to write and read, kindergarten teachers were actually confused on how i did that

That's how kids learn to read here in Brazil and I'm sure in many other countries too, it's probably harder in English because phonemes are not consistent with written words. There are multiple ways to read the same sequence of letters and that obviously makes it harder for children to learn.

Yeah, that's the reason i became good at english. Though not all letters sound the same in different words but there are lots of words that has the same letter and same pronounce. Example, the "ou" in soup and coup sound the same, the "ee" in refugee and attendee, the "le" in apple, riddle, middle, jiggle, jungle, juggle, etc.

By memorizing the patterns in the words which is easier than memorizing all the words that has that same pattern in it, you can hasten your learning progress.

I just had my first child this summer and I’m SO EXCITED, not only as a mom but as an educator to invest in his skills EARLY

In the UK, phonics is a major part of the curriculum. Its also assessrd at the end of Key Stage 2 (although huge debates on the merits of this assessment!)

That is as awesome and beautiful at just a small age he will need it in the future. Clearly accurate and he accomplished a very important step of his education👏😮

This is EXACTLY how I became such a good reader! And I'll tell you now, if the kid keeps this up, then they'll be amazing at spelling, too!

I think both sounding out and sight words are important. Like in pontification straight sounding it out might make someone mispronounce the "tion" portion. This mainly has to do with suffixes and prefixes. Memorizing tion, ight ing, ugh etc. is important. But like "want". How do you pronounce the a? Not like the a in grant or can't. You just have to know

My kids could read by age 3 because of this. I was very lucky i had a very devoted mother to my children who spent all day every day with them working the early skills - colors, shapes, math, reading. By the time they were in 1st grade, only thing we needed to work on was their behavior problems because they already knew what was being taught...
