Top 10 Most Venomous Spiders in the World
Whether you're out in the wilderness or in your home, you're never that far away from a spider.
However, there are so many different spider species, approximately 40,000 worldwide, that it's hard to
figure out which ones you need to worry about and which ones are harmless. Today we will be looking
at 10 of the most venomous spiders in the world. Make sure you watch out for number 1 because, not
only is it the most venomous spider in the world, one could be lurking in your house right now.

Number 10. The Red-legged Widow
The Red Legged Widow is a rare spider, which is a member of the Black Widow family and highly
venomous. According to all literature, this spider is indigenous to south and central Florida. This colorful
spider is less than an inch long, but packs the same type of venom as its other Widow relatives. It has a
red-orange cephalothorax, its abdomen is black with yellow rings outlining the rows of red spots and its
legs are vermillion red. On its underside, it does not have the familiar hourglass marking and instead
usually has one or two small red marks. And like with all spiders, females are almost double the size of
the male. The good news is; this spider is so rare that encounters with humans very seldom happens.
But when bites do happen, they’re not very pleasant. Bite symptoms are systemic, spreading through
the lymphatic system, and usually start about 1-3 hours after the bite. The most common symptoms are
intense pain, rigid abdominal muscles, muscle cramping, malaise, local sweating, nausea, vomiting, and
hypertension. If left untreated, these bite symptoms usually last 3-5 days.

Number 9. The Wolf Spider
The Wolf Spider is a member of the Lycosidae family, and there are around 125 species found in the
U.S., and about 50 species found in Europe. A full grown Wolf Spider is typically a half an inch to two
inches in length. They are hairy and are usually brown or gray with various stripe-like markings on their
backs. They received the name wolf spider due to an early belief that the spiders would actually hunt
their prey in a group. Some other names for the wolf spider are the Ground Spider and the Hunting
Spider. Unlike most spiders, wolf spiders do not make webs, but actively hunt for their prey.
Even though the Wolf Spider is poisonous, its venom is not lethal. This spider is not known to be
aggressive; however, they will bite if they feel like they are in harm or danger. If bitten by a Wolf Spider,
the wound should not be bandaged but an ice pack should be placed on the bite to reduce swelling. If
necessary, the victim should avoid any movement or increased heart rate. It is extremely important to
see medical attention if bitten by a Wolf Spider.

Number 8. The Sydney Funnel-web Spider
This eastern Australian native spider is one of the most feared of the venomous animals down under.
They are typically 1 to 3 inches long, and can be very aggressive when provoked. The long-lived female
Funnel Webs spend most of their time in their silk-lined tubular burrow retreats. The males tend to

wander during the warmer months of the year looking for receptive females. The Sydney Funnel Web
Spider is responsible for 13 confirmed deaths between 1927-1980.
Sydney Funnel Web spider venom contains a compound known as atracotoxin, a highly toxic ion channel
inhibitor. These spiders typically deliver a full envenomation when they bite, often striking repeatedly,
due to their aggression and their large fangs. For this reason, people are strongly advised not to
approach them. Chances of being bitten are high if encountered. There is at least one recorded case of a
small child dying within 15 minutes of a bite from a Sydney Funnel Web spider. For very small children
the amount of venom dispersed throughout the body is many times the concentration in an adult.
Fortunately, since the antivenom was developed in 1980, there have been no recorded fatalities from
Sydney Funnel Web Spider bites.

with 13 recorded deaths to 1980... how does the Sydney Funnel Web not rank in the top 2? grew up in fear of these critters!

I'm quite surprised that the funnel web spider is not in the top 3 list. That ancient spider has been around when the dinosaurs were walking on earth and is armed with strong venom to survive to this day.

In general:
Large spiders like tarantulas have weak to moderate venom. New world tarantula bites are no worse than a bee sting while some of the old world tarantula bites can send you to the hospital (more so for pain treatment than risk of death)
Small spiders like Black Widows are the ones to be careful of, unlike the large spiders they don't have size to defend themselves so they make up for that by having more toxic venom (kind of like how old world tarantulas are more venomous than the new worlds because they lack the defensive hairs)

Love the video, the Brazilian Wandering Spider has the most potent venom of any spider, but the Sydney Funnel Web is deadliest bc of it’s likelihood of interaction with people. Just my opinion but still love the video
