No, he wore contacts because he has an eye condition that makes it where he hast to have very dark lenses. This is also why and Charlie and the chocolate factory he wears extremely thick sunglasses.

Other actors had shaded contacts on too. It was easier for him since he has dark eyes. But you can notice them when he wakes up on the island with Elizabeth the next morning

The thing about left vs right side of screen is actually a thing, though. Not necessarily that we see the left side first, but that thematically, we've been trained by how we read and watch media to unconsciously interpret things.

For example, heros often come from the left side of the screen and move right. Villains tend to come from the right side and move left. Movement of the hero to the right is forward momentum, going to the left is falling back.

I would have to double check, but i think in lotr, gandolf and frodo move to the left when "entering/returning" to the shire. Frodo and sam move to the right when they're leaving and run into i think it was mary coming from the right. I think the first tavern scene was them going to the left to get to the tavern, then going right when they start out again. Any swooping shot of the party moving long distances has them moving to the right or away from the camera.

I could easily be misremembering this, since it's been a long time since i watched the trilogy, but that's the images in my memory.
