Why Pirates of the Caribbean is the Most UNDERRATED Trilogy (Video Essay)

The Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy is the most underrated trilogy I've seen. After watching it again, I was surprised by how much I loved it, especially Johnny Depp as Captain Jack Sparrow. The Curse of the Black Pearl made sense because it is the most praised, but I think Dead Man’s Chest and At World’s End deserve more respect. Considering the negative critical reaction to those movies, this is probably one of my most controversial movie opinions. As good as the trilogy is, On Stranger Tides and Dead Men Tell No Tales were just not the same. If they do Pirates of the Caribbean 6, we can only hope that they bring back director Gore Verbinski and of course, Captain Jack. Thanks for watching!

CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL (2003)
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL, the thrilling, high-seas adventure with a mysterious twist. The roguish yet charming Captain Jack Sparrow's (Johnny Depp) idyllic pirate life capsizes after his nemesis, the wily Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush), steals his ship the Black Pearl, and later attacks the town of Port Royal, kidnapping the governor's beautiful daughter Elizabeth (Keira Knightley). in a gallant attempt to rescue her and recapture the Black Pearl, Elizabeth's childhood friend Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) joins forces with Jack. What Will doesn't know is that a cursed treasure has doomed Barbossa and his crew to live forever as the undead. Rich in suspense-filled adventure, sword-clashing action, mystery, humor, unforgettable characters and never-before-seen special effects, PIRATES is a must-have epic on the grandest scale ever.

DEAD MAN’S CHEST (2006)
Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp) is back for a grand, swashbuckling nonstop joyride filled with devilish pirate humor, monstrous sea creatures and breathtaking black magic. Now, Jack's got a blood debt to pay he owes his soul to the legendary Davy Jones, ghostly Ruler of the Ocean Depths... but ever-crafty Jack isn't about to go down without a fight. Along the way, dashing Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and the beautiful Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) get caught up in the thrilling whirlpool of misadventures stirred up by Jack's quest to avoid eternal damnation by seizing the fabled Dead Man's Chest!

AT WORLD’S END (2007)
Just when he's needed most, Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp), that witty and wily charmer of a pirate, is trapped on a sea of sand in Davy Jones' Locker. In an increasingly shaky alliance, Will Turner (Orlando Bloom), Elizabeth Swann (Keira Knightley) and Captain Barbossa (Geoffrey Rush) begin a desperate quest to find and rescue him. Captain Jack's the last of the nine Pirate Lords of the Brethren Court who must come together united in one last stand to preserve the freedom-loving pirates' way of life. From exotic Singapore to World's End and beyond, from Shipwreck Island to a titanic battle, this adventure's filled with over-the-edge action, irreverent humor and seafaring myth and magic. Everything has led to this twisting, turning, wild swashbuckling ride in this final chapter of the PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN trilogy.

Man this trilogy was amazing, it’s a shame they never made a 4th or a 5th

I will defend this trilogy with my life, and I like 2&3 even more than the first one

I am a firm believer that we will never get an adventure like this again, not especially with current hollywood and disney

Honestly this trilogy ranks up there with Indiana Jones and Back To The Future in terms of being a straight up gift to humanity. The layers of meaning, the character arcs, the overlapping themes, the music, cinematography.... chef's kiss all night long. I think a lot of people have trouble with 2 and 3 because it gets pretty deep into dialogue/story and the writer's deep investment in the characters. When they released I was hardcore into the fandom so for me they were a joyride and still are.

This triology felt like the last hurrah before Hollywood embraced lazy CGI and formulaic blockbusters.

I really don't get why the sequels got such a harsh/lukewarm reception from a critical perspective. The characters were advanced, the effects were fantastic, the story was gripping and had high stakes, and the music was amazing. What more could you want?

I think one thing you missed:
Jack Sparrow is the main character, but it’s Elizabeth’s story. You hinted at it with her character arc, but it is her story that comes full circle.
It’s a great thing about the trilogy and shows where you can have a protagonist be the main character but another to serve as the viewers’/readers’ point of reference

This triology is amazing. Just watched at worlds end again. The constant backstabbing and plot twists is so good, but by the end, even though every character betrays every other character at some point, they all end up aligning in the end. Its just super pleasing to watch.

When I was a child, I remember being incredibly confused about the fact that they were making more movies after the 3rd one. The 3rd movie had such a solid and bittersweet ending. The newer movies just undermine everything that happens in the 3rd one.

Will and Elizabeth having their final goodbye at worlds end. REALLY MAKES ME CRY! 😭💙💙🖤

Will and Elizabeth had such chemistry. That final scene on the beach has more soul in it than 99.9% of all romances ever shot on camera.

I used to dislike At Worlds end, but it is now one of my most favourite movies of all time.

After Johnny won the trial, a local cinema did a POTC screening for a week. During the scene where Jack arrives with his ship with the help of the crabs, everyone was cheering.😂

the kraken is actually half practical, which really makes you feel the impact. all the destruction is also 100% practical, and if I remember correctly, the kraken mouth is half practical, but they cgi over it because it actually looked unrealistic ironically enough

As someone who has been a champion of these movies for quite literally near my entire life, it is so rewarding and validating after all these years to FINALLY see Dead Man's Chest and At World's End get the recognition they deserve as truly great sequels in a wholly satisfying trilogy. Great video!

I dont understand why is so hard for the world to see the magnificence of this trilogy. This is my infance movie saga, such as Star Wars, Jurassic Park or Harry Potter were for other people. And indeed is so underrated.

I knew the moment Davy jones was introduced, no villain they introduced after him would be better than him.

Even if people didn't like the 2 and 3rd, you can't deny how good the music is between all the films

Jack being in the exact same spot in the end adds a touch of believability to the movies in my opinion. we often see character arcs in fantasy movies where the heroes become kings, emperors, generals, great magicians who save the world, and get through such big changes, while Jack no matter the great story and adventures it's back at square one, as if he could have had countless adventures before the curse of the black pearl ending up where it was anyway.
