Hello Mr. Freeman, I just wanted to say thank you. The exam is tomorrow and I've been watching the 80 day review from the beginning, participated in your livestreams, and have been following along as best I can. I'm very grateful to you and the effort you take to help us so thanks a whole lot and let's hope we get good scores!

Bro I wish my school did the exam digital; the hardest part for me is just getting the information on the paper in time

I took notes throughout this video, if anyone wants to see I’ll send them here:

DBQ notes
As I’m reading, annotate and circle places where it relates to the prompt. Also briefly summarize and group.

Grouping structures DBQ

Look for anything you learned throughout the year that can support your documents, basically outside evidence.

Structure:
Start by doing 2-4 sentences of historical context.
^ Imagine a kid just transferred into class and doesn’t know what imperialism is, write down how you would catch them up.
^ Context funnels down into what the prompt was about. End context by getting back to the prompt.

After context, next sentence should be thesis. Following the formula, “Railroads had a massive impact on empire building. Railroads effected empire building by (2 or 3 measureable ways railroads impacted empires) connecting distant parts of their empire, building nationalism among indigenous populations, and allowing empires to extract more wealth, more quickly to return back home.

Now reread, is that claim supportable by evidence that is in the documents?

Whenever you bring up a document write a one sentence summary about what is going on in the document. Do for all 7 documents

Topic sentence, [document 1 says this, how it supports your thesis (use “therefore”)] repeat for document 2 and three

What in the document supports the argument thesis is asking about, what in this document supports ideas about railroads and empire building

Source at least two documents, S.O.A.P

Purpose of a document is never to show you. Look at purpose of the author and what they are trying to accomplish with it. It wasn’t to show future history students. It was to get something done back then.

Don’t just point out the sourcing, explain how it is relevant to the essay. Don’t just identify the audience, explain how it changes something or supports your argument. Use: “Therefore” “This matters because” “This is relevant to my argument because” “this matters because the British east india company controlled the railroads and could plausibly make the changes the author is requesting.”

^ Source 3 or 4.

Source right after document is used to support thesis.

USING DOCUMENTS FORMULA:
- Describe Document
- Use it to support thesis
- Source It

^ Do for all 7 documents if possible

Requirements:
Describe 3
Support 4
Source 2

For external evidence point, think about what’s missing. Do you know anything else that can support your thesis?

Can’t just mention it, must describe and support this evidence that’s not in the documents.

Put this external evidence somewhere where it can fit.

Complexity:
Evidence from all 7 documents
Source 4 documents

General DBQ Writing Process Breakdown:
1: Rewrite prompt and always keep in focus

2: Take notes on documents

3: Start with context leading to thesis

4: End intro with thesis addressing the
prompt using actual things the prompt is asking about.

5: group documents into 2-5 paragraphs and start each with a topic sentence. Remember: “describe it, support it, source it.” (for all 7 documents).

6: What’s missing that could support your thesis? (Outside Information)

7: Use 7 documents, and source 4

8: End document with a restatement of the thesis. Can you be more specific or add more to it?

Love this video...but I'm a really slow-paced test-taker so I'd probably have to discard half the tips said here or I'd be completely screwed on timing 😭😭

Hi, really like the videos and content. But how do you write the historical context to fit in your essay for the complexity point? How do you write it?

For evidence beyond the documents, do you only have to do it once for the point?

Can you write an example dbq or analyze an example dbq and explain how it earns the points? I know you just gave a step by step guide but I'm still slightly confused on how I would go about analysis and proving why the evidence connects to a thesis.
