📌 Shoulder Bursitis: What It Is & How to Know If You Have It
🚨 Shoulder pain? It could be bursitis—but it might be something more! Many people are misdiagnosed with bursitis when the real issue could be a rotator cuff tear, arthritis, or even neck-related pain. In this video, I break down what shoulder bursitis really is, its symptoms, and how to know if you actually have it.

🔍 What You’ll Learn in This Video:
✔ What is Shoulder Bursitis? – Understanding inflammation of the bursa and why it causes pain.
✔ Common Symptoms & Causes – Overuse, rotator cuff issues, or irritation—what’s triggering your pain?
✔ Bursitis vs. Other Shoulder Issues – Could it be something else? When to see a doctor.
✔ Best Treatments for Bursitis – Rest, ice (not heat!), anti-inflammatories, physical therapy, and injections.
✔ When to Seek Medical Help – If pain persists, it’s time to see a specialist.

🛑 Bottom Line: Shoulder bursitis is common, but it’s not always the full story. Learn how to spot it, treat it, and when to see a doctor to rule out more serious issues.

I had X-rays and a sonogram done the other day …about two months ago I had irritating side shoulder pain mostly at night though I really think it was due to my side sleeping and horrible sleeping habits. The doc said bursitis recommended PT if that’s not good after 4wks he will dk a shot. I can raise my arm lift without pain but at night when still it seems like it flares up .. but what you explained is what he was explaining very thorough. I wanted to do additional research… thanks

I did masonry for 35 yrs and I had arthroscopic on my Left Shoulder '07'Right '09. Replaced L '20. I have bone on bone in my right shoulder and it will be replaced in March'25. I live near Buffalo, NY and we got hammered with snow. Dec 1, I snowblowed and shoveled two drive ways. About an hour after I got done, there was severe pain in my right shoulder. I constantly iced it every 45 min. Just moving killed me, my hand swelled and fingers swelled and I couldn't clench my fist. I went to urgent care at the shoulder center I go to. Nothing on the x rays and they gave me RX for Prednisone. I couldn't sleep in a bed - it felt like something was in the back of my shoulder. I couldn't really sleep in a recliner for 4 days. I rested it for a week. Then I started the shoulder stretching exercises It felt a lot better. It took 12 days to finally sleep in a bed. I learned to shovel with my one arm and lift the shovel with my foot from before. Just doing that annoyed my shoulder. Watching this video the the out side of the shoulder is exactly where I have pain when I move my arm up from the side. it feels like someone one punched me there. I get an MRI Jan 2. Nice video !

Very good video, thank you. In my case, I was diagnosed with shoulder bursitis a few years ago and I haven't been able to treat it because I don't have health insurance. It all started with some tendonitis from using a mouse and laptop for long hours. When I went for an ultrasound, the symptoms I felt at the time were like biceps tendonitis and for a while my hands were even stiff when I woke up. What stopped the pain a few years ago was a corticoid injection (not in the shoulder). Today I have limited movement in my arm and a feeling of tiredness or even burning between my shoulder and biceps. In my case, the usual anti-inflammatories didn't work and at the same time, these days it's hard not to use a laptop. I'm due to go back for a series of tests to see the current state of my shoulder, but I'm not sure if I should go back to my physical activities and weight training, what do you think?

Hi Dr. Orcutt! I’m on week 18 now after having two fully torn rotator cuffs repaired and a slap tear level 2. I think the roughest part of PT is behind me. Started some light strength training and when I do 45 degree lifts with 2 lb dumbbells I have a lot of clunking behind my shoulder blade. My PT says he doesn’t know what would cause this. I go back to dr next week. There is no pain just an irritating feeling. It’s not a click, it is a much deeper sound. My PT has tested my rotator cuff strength and says I’m great. Any ideas? I also had a lot of swelling in my bicep area but that is slowly getting better. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge. I have shared your channel with 4 people who are now going to have rotator cuff surgery. You are awesome!

Will it help if you hold your arm up? My husband is not able to sleep in our bed because of the pain. The only thing that takes away his pain is holding it up inside the cushion. Please help me understand if this is bursitis. It's definitely not a torn rotator cuff, that we do know. 😊😊 TFS NEW FOLLOWER

I've been going to PT for a month now and haven't had any improvement. I finally got a referral to an Orthopedic doctor who took X-rays today and said the bone structure was ok. He thinks it is bursitis, so he referred me to get a MRI. I found out a MRI costs over $1, 100. even with insurance. Should I just try a different PT or are MRI's necessary?

Hi doctor, my MRI report says : IMPRESSION:
1. Mild supraspinatus tendinosis is noted. Mild subacromial/subdeltoid bursitis is seen.
2. Distal acromion fracture is seen with intense bone marrow oedema.

Is it that bad as it sounds like ? And if you have recommendations please help me out, i have stopped playing in the gym since 6 months
