John 3:9-10

9 Nicodemus answered and said unto him, How can these things be?

10 Jesus answered and said unto him, ***Art thou a master of Israel***, and knowest not these things?

Nicodemus should have known about baptism, being a leader of the Jewish rituals in the temple. Both the priest and the sacrifice animals go through a washing. This shouldn't have confused Nicodemus.

Baptism in the apostolic time was always in the name of Jesus for forgiveness of sins. This also occurred in post apostolic days in Rome to around 270 onwards
