The yellow tip is an egg tooth, it helps them break through the egg when hatching. It will fall off so don't be alarmed.

Baby turtles will grow to be strong turtles and live like a family and the pond idea is a good thing to do for turtles

My son and I were fishing at a dam one day and saw some seagulls going nuts, of course we had to investigate. A batch of newly hatched turtles were what they were feasting on. There was one left and of course it had to come home with us. She looked just like yours and the vet (yes there are vets who specialize) said she was a yellow bellied slider. She had the most personality of any aquatic animal I had ever seen and haven't seen since. She was hand fed, liked frequent water "baths" and loved to be with people . Her name is SKOOT :) and she is now part of the hands on exhibit at the local environmental center. After 9 years here, my son joined the marines and I knew I couldn't invest the time needed to care for her properly, so I did the next best thing I could for her. Now she helps to teach students and is still the most beautiful turtle I have ever seen. I hope you enjoy yours.

The yellow tip on their nose is the egg tooth (i believe thats how its called). Its used for them to crack the egg and hatch. It fades away.

Congrats! The first hatch is always the best. As for species, they're yellow bellied sliders (Trachemys scripta scripta) mixed with red eared slider (T. s. elegans) meaning they're intergrades between subspecies. Best of luck with 'em!

After turtles hatch they spend a week or so still in the ground where they absorb their embryo and finish developing

They look like yellow belly red ear hybrids. They don’t have red ears but do have the green carapace of a Redear but they’re plastron is yellow like a yellow belly slider.
