My mom was a single mom. She worked her behind off so that my brothers and I would not be in need. She washed and ironed and cooked for the neighbors. She had her clients established. Then my brothers and I would make the deliveries. She scrimped and saved and bargain shopped, but there was always a roof over our heads, food on the table and clothes on our backs. She never went on welfare to teach us that we didn’t have to either. I’m not knocking those who do seek government aid. It’s there for those who need it. My mom just chose not to seek it. We were Goodwill kids and I am damn proud of it, because there were clothes on our backs and birthdays and Christmases there were always gifts. As for the help from my dad? He was never around. He abandoned us when I was about 8, and never even looked back except for the time he came crawling on his hands and knees begging to be let out of paying alimony and child support. So how is that for help? I raise my glass to all you single parents who are struggling to take care of your kids. God’s blessings on you.

I know how it feels to have just a mom. My mom and dad don’t get along anymore so me and mom moved out to a different house closer to my school because mom didn’t love dad anymore. Besides that, I’m actually doing better with me and my mom ourselves.
