“Bohemian Rhapsody,” from A Night at the Opera, is undoubtedly one of the greatest rock songs of all time and there's no arguing that. It remains one of the most enigmatic, inscrutable songs in the history of rock.
“Bohemian Rhapsody” joins the ranks of other famous hits that are sung but never fully understood like Don Mclean’s “American Pie” (1971), Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” (1971). So what exactly is the meaning of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody?
From Wikipedia - Queen states that "Bohemian Rhapsody" is about a young man who has accidentally killed someone and, like Faust, sold his soul to the devil. On the night before his execution, he calls for God saying, "Bismillah" ("In the name of God" in Arabic), and with the help of angels, regains his soul from Shaitan (the devil in Arabic).
A close examination of the lyrics will reveal that the song is indeed about relationships — specifically the relationship of Mercury to himself, his spouse, family, and God providing the context for the struggles he faced in deciding to face the music, as it were, to come out.
This is everyone's most favorite Queen song of all time! You always get vivid pictures in your head whenever you listen to it. It almost goes on like a play. And the more you listen to it, the more inquisitive you get. But it gets difficult to understand the meaning of a song when the band members themselves refuse to reveal the inception of the lyrics.
The most transparent interpretation can be - a boy pleading in front of an unsympathetic jury after murdering a man. The jury may be a religious group, as pointed by the word 'Bismillah', which is the first word of every chapter of the Quran (Freddie belonged to a Zoroastrian family). Though, a small voice in the group does indeed show a little sympathy every now and then.
Freddie Mercury believed, we need to simply discover who we are, accept who we are, and be who we are. So to reduce Bohemian Rhapsody down to its simplest terms, it states: live and let live.
