The fun cheery nursery rhyme of your childhood could have a dark and disturbing past! Or not. Probably not.

As a kid in 1960's Australia, the lyric was "A-tishoo, a-tishoo, we all fall down", not "Ashes, ashes...". This reinforced the idea that it was about plague or disease of some sort. After that line, all the kids would dramatically fall to the ground, which was kind of fun. Lots of 19th century nursery rhymes are about death.

There will be another nursery rhyme in the 30th century because of the coronavirus.

Soon enough, kids will be singing about Covid 19

When I was a kid I always imagined this song was about a group of kids that were picking flowers but a fire started (the ashes ashes line) and they all “fell down” because they couldn’t escape the garden quick enough.

And, “pocket full of posies” is relative because because used to carry pockets full of flowers to cover the scent of dead bodies from the plague. Also, “ashes” is as well relative because they used to burn down the houses of people with dead bodies in it.

In Australia were I am from the nursery rhyme goes like this
Ring-a-ring-a-rosies

A tissue, a tissue
We all fall down

That's a nice looking timeline. Great video, I'm glad to lay that myth to rest!

I always thought it was about smoking weed...
• "Ring around the rosie..." ...smoke a joint (rosie... flower... buds) in a circle of friends.
• "Pocket full of posies." ...more flowers... buds.
• "Ashes... ashes" ...from smoking the buds.
• "We all fall down" ...we are tired and relaxed after smoking weed.

In the UK, we used to sing "aa-tishu aa-tishu we all fall down"
The song probably changed after the spanish flu, in some bid to warn people.. or just to remember maybe, who knows

So happy to see this myth being dispelled. People never believe me when I tell them this connection is relatively recent and probably completely made up!

Ring-a-round the rosie,
A pocket full of posies,
Ashes! Ashes!
We all fall down.
Ring-a-round the rosie,
This evil thing it knows me,
Lost ghosts surround me I can't fall down. :)

Most nursery rhymes, have dark meanings behind them.

But they’ve been changed throughout the years and different countries have different versions so no one knows the OG meaning.

In the UK instead of “Ashes” we say “Ahtishoo Ahtishoo we all fall down” we was believed you like die after a sneeze or something

Till now I thought it was ‘Ring-a-Ring-a-Roses Pocket full of poses Husha busha we all fell down!!!’ Majority of kids in India pronounce it that way😂😅

In 4th grade, my music teacher told me that there is tons of dark meaning to nursery rhymes. Kids would make up games and sing about it so it would become less scary and help them get through whatever is going on. Peas Porridge Hot was about kids who would have to eat the porridge or starve, Ring around the Rosie was about people who get the Plague, and Missiles was about the disease and there are just so much more.

My friend said the nursery rhyme as:

*Ring around the rosie, pocket full of posies, ashes, ashes, and we all fall to our deaths

Snopes published an excellent article on why "Ring Around the Rosie" is probably not about the plague at all, and it covers a lot of the same bases as this video. Thanks so much.

This is the way my country sings it:
Ring a ring a roses
a pocket full of posies
a-tissue, a-tissue
we all fall down
Fishies in the water fishies in the sea
we all jump up in a
one! two! three!

Its about fertilizing roses and pulling their stems down to the ground (some people still do this, its pegging down the canes ) then mulch to protect for winter. Wood ash is a fertilizer. Applied in a ring around the base of the plant to encourage roots to grow outward.
