M.E.109 (Tim Crowley, Simon Crewe, Mark Slinger, Thomas Graham) were influenced by many great artists.

M.E.109 on Discogs:

M.E.109 was originally formed in 1978 by Tim Crowley, Simon Crewe, Mark Slinger and Thomas Graham. Tim and Mark were 18 years old and Simon 17.
• Tim - Lead, rhythm guitar, vocals
• Thomas Graham - Rhythm guitar, vocals
• Simon - Drums
• Mark - Bass guitar, vocals
Playing in local venues they established a strong following and used the money from gigs to fund studio time at Cargo Studios in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, England:

From a small market town in the North of England, it was difficult to attract interest from London based recording companies. Beggars Banquet Records got there first and with a distribution deal from WEA:

Newspapers reported their sound as “catchy sixties style music with witty lyrics” and “good breezy new wave power pop".

Didn't know that was an 80s song. Only heard the newer remake, a few years ago. Makes sense, great song.
