Somebody That I Used To Know lyrics

Now and then I think of when we were together
Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
Told myself that you were right for me
But felt so lonely in your company
But that was love and it's an ache I still remember

You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end
Always the end
So when we found that we could not make sense
Well you said that we would still be friends
But I'll admit that I was glad that it was over

But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened
And that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger
And that feels so rough
You didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records
And then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know

Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over
But had me believing it was always something that I'd done
And I don't wanna live that way
Reading into every word you say
You said that you could let it go
And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know...

But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened
And that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger
And that feels so rough
You didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records
And then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know

I used to know
That I used to know

Somebody...

Like a fine wine, this song gets better with age. Truly memorable

In 2007 I met this young woman who became my best friend, she made me laugh better than nobody, the sun in my life. In 2011 we start a relationship but the begining was very difficult for several reason (our exs, the jealousy…) and we break up at the same time this song came out. I was so sad… but few weeks after we got back together. And today she is my wife since 2015, and she sleeping next to me as i write these lines. The only love of my life. The break up songs exist, but in the real life, sometimes, the ending is better 😉

It has always amazed me how quickly love can turn to hate when a couple breaks up. They go from wanting to love each other to wanting to hurt each other.

I like how they sing separately; talk/yell over each other. They are not on the same page.

After all these years I'm only realising he gradually blends into the background as a metaphor to the relationship fading out, clever

I used to love this song when I was younger and grew obessed with it when it came out. But now fresh out of my first relationship..I can finally appreciate the lyrics and relate to them to the depths of my soul.

I'm thankful my ex had the courage to initiate the break up once the relationship shifted to a hollow and bitter dynamic. Although there are agonizing emotions that come up at this point of my healing journey, I'm so grateful that he saved us both from many years of pain and heartache.

We weren't right for each other in the end, but everything I've learned about myself after our time together- is still an unforgettable and integral part of rediscovering how to love myself.
-So Thank you MB, I wish you the best.

the part when he says somebody that i used to know and the paint is disappearing off her body is perfect

When the OoohOohOooooh’s are back up vocals to the yelling in the middle of the song; it really captures the ANGST of fighting and talking over one another when arguing.

Almost all of us have been there when it’s near the end or at the end when blame and hurt and a sense of loss all make for a tremendous pain we never forget.

The way the drums kick in loudly at about 2.47 is fantastic.

It's September 2023 and this song just never gets old. The video is so beautifully done and their voices are perfectly blended together and against each other. I never tire of listening to it or watching the video...

This song is like wine, the older it is, the better it sounds

A song about a suppressed relationship that lay dormant until it couldn't last any longer! A song about most people's love lives!

I'm still listening to this in 2024, and I still find the song and the video a powerful message. Painting one into your picture or taking them out

This song needs to go on at least three times as long - we need to hear more of her side of the story.

As someone who has gotten out of an abusive relationship this song hits differently. When you think that somebody was your whole life and you could not live without them but once you actually start doing it, you see that they were slowly killing you. I've gotten to a point in my life that I never thought was possible with actually being free of suicidal thoughts, being able to feel joy and living my own life instead of my whole life being about making the other person happy and being manipulated into Stockholm syndrome. After someone has screwed you over so many times and made you believe it was always something you did, you do want to cut all the ties to that person. For your own safety.
Don't let anyone tell you that abuse is a normal thing that happens in every relationship and you should just deal with it. If you think this is the case for you, do some research on narcissism and you might be surprised how many things it will clear up. Love bombing is not love, it's not worth it to let someone destroy you just so you can have some good days every now and then.

Anyone struggling with addiction? Imagine addiction is the man and your will power is the women. Listen to the song with that mindset.

Stay strong!
