A hydrogen bomb is actually a combination of fission and fusion often with multiple stages; the largest thermo nuclear explosion ever was a 50mT bomb called the Tsar Bomba which had three stages.

I doubt that's what was said, because that is not even sort of how any type of bomb works. The energy released by a kg of TNT is not itself TNT.

Correction: the hydrogen bomb is both fission AND fusion. The fuels in atomic bombs don't completely detonate, the fusion bombards the isotopes with even more atoms the causes even more fission.
