Fun fact: soviets actually made it for 100 megaton TNT yield but they feared that it could destroy earth's atmosphere so they decreased the yield upto 50 megaton TNT

fun fact: the yield was cut in half so that the pilots could make it back without dying of radiation

He forgot to mention it was dialed down at the last minute from 100MT to 50MT. If it was not dialed down, the damage would have been much more wide spread.

Fact for those interested.

The Tsar bomba is already pretty much at the border of how much yield a nuke can have in terms of damage caused per kiloton of power.
Above it, you get decremental results, because most of the energy from the explosion gets sent into space and wasted.

So if you think a 500 megaton explosion, 10 times the tsar bomb, would have 10 times the destructive radius, that’s not how it works.

The actual destructive radius on earth would be maybe a few more kilometers while 90% of the energy would get blasted into space. Detonated at enough height the fireball would be huge and have a huge radius where it burns people and buildings.

Dropping 10 tsar bombs would have a way way larger impact than 1 single 500megaton bomb.

But even this is ridiculous and unnecessary, the last several megaton USA bomb, the B53 with 9 megatons of power was disassembled in 2011 and now the b83 is the largest one active with 1.2 megaton.

Accuracy is much more dangerous and useful than sheer explosion size.

People worry about how bigger bombs can be now days.
They are much smaller.

Modern dangers are more the sheer accuracy or speed.
Like Chinese supersonic missiles that are impossible to stop.

Funfact:
1. they only used 50% plutonium of what was originally supposed to be
2. The shockwave circled the world 3 times
3. The bomb caused an earthquake strength of 5.2

Thanks for pointing out that it was never used in combat. Never would have guessed that.

The Tsar Bomba was the point at which everyone said "Okay, lets not. We'll certainly send mankind back to the Stone Age if we continue with this route, if not wipe ourselves out completely"

The scientist that designed it reduced the the fuel by half. Stating that if it was it's original condition it would have shot debris into space!

Fun fact: the Tsar bomb is actually a Hydrogen Bomb and the Russian scientists had to test the bomb on 50 megatons instead of 100 so they didn’t kill anyone
