An increasingly tetchy battle between Max Verstappen and Lando Norris in the closing laps of F1's Austrian Grand Prix eventually resulted in the two friends colliding, costing both a shot at victory at the Red Bull Ring.
Glenn Freeman and Edd Straw take a look at the fallout from the incident, including how the drivers' views differed, a hard-hitting opinion from McLaren team boss Andrea Stella, plus what it's likely to mean for how Verstappen and Norris race each other in the future, and their off-track friendship.

Once upon a time, Hamilton and Rosberg were friends.

Friendships and teammates only last when there’s a clear 1 and 2

People have always complained that Norris is not aggressive enough to be a world champion, and finally when he shows some aggressivness, people complain that his wheel to wheel combat is bad, he is too impatient etc. Come on people, pick up your poison 🤷‍♂️.

Oooooh last week, didn't LN say that MV had enough space when he pushed him on to the grass at the start of the Spanish GP.

It's situations like this that Red Bull want Perez to be where Russel was and pick up the pieces, yet Perez got beaten and overtaken by a Haas, this guy won't be in Red Bull next year if he keeps this up, that new contract will be ripped to shreds.

Perez being 17 seconds behind Max who had a 10second penalty and a pit stop… that second seat is a waste

Ricciardo and Verstappen had many incidents (quite famously) and they, too, have said their friendship survived in part due to Ricciardo leaving Red Bull.

Verstappen complaining about divebombs lol

The complaints over the racing finally being close is nuts. Penalty is fine, excited to see them race close through the rest of the season

Hold on! Verstappen is criticizing dive bombing? Verstappen! This must be a joke. Verstappen!

It might have cost him the race, but today Lando made Max crack under pressure for the first time since 2021.

I'm surprised more people aren't talking about how max, in a damaged car, forced norris onto the grass on the run to t4

This is how Verstappen drives.

He settled down a bit since he first appeared in F1, but more than that other drivers simply learned to give him room in order to avoid crashing. Even Lewis would tend to give way to him because Lewis understood that it wasn’t worth the risk and he didn’t have to battle that hard with Max - until he did. As soon as Louis stopped being willing to simply give way, they started coming together.

We haven’t really seen it again since 2021 because Max hasn’t really had to race anybody due to that car being so dominant. The more he has to fight, the more we are going to see collisions - because, as Norris just learned, Max doesn’t fight cleanly, and the stewards rarely intervene when he does things like moving under braking.

I feel badly for Norris - He was trying to be respectful, and he really didn’t expect Max to pull the sort of things on him that he had pulled on Lewis. If he was travelling on Max’s plane this weekend, that’s going to be a very uncomfortable trip.

And Norris is going to have to learn to fight fire with fire. If you want to beat Max in anything approaching equal machinery, you have to be willing to race like he does, or he will steamroll over you.

Why are we talkin about his. Look at the facts last week there were no talks when Norris pushed Verstappen of during the start in Barcelone? No one is talking about this were is the consistency in here!

Once upon a time F1 had racing without 100's of penalties per season. Just let them race. It's supposed to be about racing. Not micro managing. evrything

Max has always reminded me a lot of schumacher in that he’s always a happy Chappy and relatively respectful to everyone up until he gets threatened by another driver who could beat him and will proceed to throw every toy out of the cot until he gets his way - he really hates taking full responsibility for problems he causes, unlike other drivers like Leclerc who don’t take almost any issue owning up to their mistakes. Max has the biggest ego on track, it just hasn’t been as present as you’d expect in the last couple years because he’s almost always winning every race easily so there’s no need to show it. This second half of the season is gonna be spicy af.

This incident reminds me of the Schumacher days when he was dominating races. In those days he always crashed into other drivers who were about to beat him.
