I learned this as the “Old Norwegian Cast-on” about a year ago. It is now my go to, especially for top down socks!

Excellent tutorial. I am from the North of England and learned to do a twisted cast on by casting on “over my thumb” (identical cast-on is also traditional in Maine - see Robin Hanson’s books). Your slingshot method gives the same result and is quicker though the “over the thumb” method gives more precise tension control and can be used to cast on the initial starting stitch
