One could say that the Iranians' downfall at this time was their own fault. Had they not engaged in a civil war which involved their various 'houses' and instead stayed united they would have stopped the Arabs already in Mesopotamia. Not to mention that the corrupt minded nobles had a bad habit of engaging in regicide which is like asking for major trouble with your own kinsmen and compatriots, basically the root cause for their undoing.
